THE RAPTOR REPORT
The Student Perspective...
by Jennie Schaaf

Being a Magnet student means you are labeled in certain ways just by virtue of being accepted to the school.  Smart and intellectual are two words that come to mind.  Some labels, both positive and negative, are earned by behavior or character, but often labels are thrown around without all the facts or in such a way that they characterize the labeled person far too one-dimensionally.  In my years here, I have heard many of them and I find that we, like all people, are more than the labels we have been given.  I see smart kids, but I also see talented kids who want to change the world for the better.  We are intellectuals, but we are also athletes, musicians, and leaders and it is possible to be all of those at the same time.  And someone may label us nerds, but we are also cool.

I don't look at Magnet students and see a bunch of rich kids.  I see people from all parts of town and all walks of life who share a common bond of curiosity and rising to challenges.  I don't see spoiled kids.  I see young adults who routinely give back with their time and talent.  They volunteer beyond any required hours and they spearhead projects that make a difference in our community.  I cannot look at our student body and measure the racial diversity or the lack thereof, but I see human beings of many ethnic and racial backgrounds who really set that aside within the walls of our school.  We support our classmates and come together in the classroom, through activities, or just going down the hall.  We go beyond being members of a football team and become true brothers who celebrate off field the victory that we earned together on field.  We are a sisterhood that lifts our members up so we can all reach our goals.  We look beyond color and superficial matters and respect what we all share here.  We are a special community.  We are Magnet.

Science Club Competes at SC Jr. Academy of Science Competition
The AMHS science club competed at the South Carolina Junior Academy of Science's Science Jeopardy competition on Saturday, November 1 at the Citadel. Shaoni Dasgupta, Dawn Jensen, Boone Jones, Robyn Loucks, Emily Rojas, Anna Tavormina, and Sarah Zhang watched our teams compete against students from across the state. The freshmen team of Fanny Cheung, Gabbi Drusin, and Jenny Yao came in 6th. The freshman team of Aidan Gomez, Ethan Kautz, and John Staub came in 5th. The senior team of Timothy Corder, Kilby McCormick, and Vaibhav Mohanty qualified for the final round. They needed a fourth member and added John Staub to their team, which won the overall competition. In true Magnet form, they calculated their final Jeopardy bid so that they would win by 1 point.

If any senior is interested in other science competitions in which they can enter their thesis for cash and prizes, please see Ms. Metzner-Roop by Friday. Your thesis doesn't have to be done by Friday, but we need a head count of people who are interested. Contact katharinelee_roop@charleston.k12.sc.us for more information.
