Principal Points: October
|
Happy Halloween, Magnet! We will be celebrating this Friday night by hosting Bishop England's football team, and we invite everyone to come out, cheer the Raptors, and enjoy a great evening of high school football.
While we are at the close of the month, there are a couple of items for your attention:
Report Cards for the first term went home today with the students. Although students do keep track of their progress through the grade postings on Power School, the report card is still an important document of academic achievement.
Federal Cards also went home today with each student, and they must be completed and returned as soon as possible.
Infosnap: Everyone should have received a letter from AMHS about Infosnap and the procedures for logging on and updating student information. The updating ought to be done as soon as possible. If you did not receive a letter or need assistance with the process, please contact Ms. Redfern at 746-6378 or marjorie_redfern@charleston.k12.sc.us or Ms. Pinckney at 746-6400 or lucy_pinckney@charleston.k12.sc.us.
Admissions Process begins again. Following the CCSD School Choice Fair, which was held on Saturday, September 21, 2014, the application for the 2015-2016 school year is now online on the AMHS website. Students interested in attending AMHS will submit their applications by November 21, 2014, and in the meantime, we did host a general Open House October 15, 2014 with two follow-up group tour sessions: October 21st at 9:30 AM and October 23rd at 1:30 PM. Everyone who attended spoke positively of the program and especially of the students they met.
Low Country Food Bank Drive: Each Fall schools from across the Tri-County area compete to gather canned foods for the Low Country Food Bank. It is a spirited and energetic competition among our Focus Classes and local high schools, and it is an outstanding opportunity for us to share our bounty with others.
Thank you for your continuing support as AMHS moves ahead into the season of college applications, thesis presentations, and Fall sports' playoffs. If we can help with anything, please call us at 746-1300.
Judith Peterson, AMHS Principal

SIC Update
|
AMHS School Improvement Council a SC State Mandated Council started in 1977 by former SC Governor and former US Department of Education Secretary Dick Riley to improve schools and give parents a voice.
AMHS SIC is committed to stand for the SIC Resolution that protects our children and all the children of CCSD's civil rights. Our resolution does not address employee contracts.
The resolution is here for you to review.
As the SIC Chair, I want to thank all of the AMHS students, Teachers, Administration, and parent volunteers for focussing on the civil rights of all of the children of CCSD This Resolution was passed with unanimous approval by the SIC group which includes our wonderful Support groups of PIE, Boosters, and AMF....As I requested 8 long days ago...please join one of the groups with your time, money, talent, and/or brain capital.... all the students of CCSD benefit when parents support schools.
AMHS SIC RESOLUTION 10/22/2014
AMHS SIC respectfully requests that the CCSD provide a written definition of its current protocol and method for carrying out investigations related to any student in the district that could result in disciplinary action by CCSD (or by local, or federal authorities)- and also confirm that those practices are presently being applied consistently and in all instances through out the District. We respectfully request CCSD written reply within five (5) days of this letter.
If the investigation carried out by CCSD with AMHS students on October 16th, 2014 is consistent with CCSD's currently approved practices and protocol, then AMHS SIC request that CCSD change its practices within five (5) days.
CCSD investigations should respect individuals' rights and the rights of parents- and should be required to conclude with a sense of closure such that all affected parties have opportunities to learn in a positive way from appropriate and timely actions taken by administrators or other authorities.
Lastly, we request that the CCSD's investigation practices and protocols be approved by the SIC's of at least a majority of the District's schools including those from all high schools.
Kindly,
Darlene Rawls, MD
SIC Chair
