To Jennie Schaaf, Staff and Parents at AMHS,

Thank you for your kind review of my Convocation Keynote on October 1. I would like to thank the staff and parents at AMHS for allowing me to speak with you and the other students. More importantly, I would like to thank you and the other students for listening, caring and participating in Convocation. Sometimes when I ask students to do "Admission Aerobics" and there are no parents pushing them to participate, I get half-hearted response and lots of eye rolling. I'm sure there was some eye rolling that day, but you all participated, and that's great! Your success in college and in life will in many ways hinge on the same thing - participation, enthusiasm and an occasional "hip hip hooray!" Have a great year, and thank you for allowing me to be part of your school life.

Nichole Dalzell Worthy Recipient of the Gilded Feather
By now, you must have heard about one of the most successful programs PIE has put on since I've been around, the October 1st  Student Convocation, Career Symposium and Parent College Awareness night. I can tell you from firsthand experience that Nichole Dalzell managed the entire day as if she was a team of ten Energizer Bunnies. She had some terrific help from our Guidance Counselor, Donna Taylor (who brought the original idea for the Career Symposium to AMHS) and our Media Center director, Susan Henley, who is a whiz at putting together posters, programs and web spots. And Nichole gives credit to the wonderful parent volunteers who brought food and gave their time throughout the day; her own parents were here from Arizona and helped her for two solid days.
But the day was organized entirely by Nichole (who rivals the Air Force with check lists) and was executed so smoothly only because she had planned it down to the tiniest detail.

Mrs. Nichole Dalzell, mother of Sophomore twins Faith and Zach, has been going ABOVE and BEYOND for AMHS since the day she walked in the door. I was so grateful when she elected to join PIE last spring, and immediately volunteered to Chair the Family Enrichment/College Awareness Committee.  She began planning this event early in the summer, and she gathered strength each week and each day until she had built into a Category 5 storm of energy and enthusiasm. Our teachers have been full of praise for the entire day (we are so lucky to have such wonderful teachers who take the time to thank PIE for everything we do); here is a sample of what they had to say about the great day planned by Nichole:

I imagine you're getting lots of thanks from us but I just wanted to add mine - yesterday was great.

The speaker was one of the best we've ever had, I heard nothing but good things from the students and that has NEVER happened before.

They all seemed to enjoy the professionals. And the food was lovely too! Thanks for all you do for us (and, of course, for the food!!!)

I just wanted to thank you and all of PIE for your efforts at the career symposium. It was a great idea and I think everyone enjoyed it immensely, what an incredible experience you facilitated for us yesterday!

The whole program was so well put together, and it really ran as a very professional symposium like those I've attended for work. The attention to detail was phenomenal; I am so thankful to have been part of it!

Thank you for all you did for our school yesterday.  It really meant a lot to us.

Wow!  The Career Symposium was a triumph - from the extensive planning to the actual speakers, you created a valuable experience for our students and I only wish you could have heard the comments in the classrooms and at the faculty meeting.  Thank you so much for making this happen - well done!  Very well done!

Additionally, I have talked with some of the professionals who spoke at the Symposium, each one has said: 'in comparison to the many events I have attended and spoken at, the Academic Magnet Career Symposium was, by far, the most well organized and fun to take part in!'  High praise indeed for our own wonderful Nichole Dalzell.

Girl, you can't duck away and hide behind all the helpers you have thanked, the Gilded Feather has landed firmly on your shoulders!

Komen Lowcountry Race for the Cure
October 18, 2014
Family Circle Stadium, Daniel Island, SC
Volunteers play a vital role in the Susan G. Komen Lowcountry Race for the Cure. Their passion and commitment is what makes our Race successful. Today, thanks to more than 100,000 survivors and volunteers/activists, Susan G. Komen is the world's largest, most progressive grassroots organization fighting breast cancer.

There are two ways you can volunteer for the Race:
We are always looking for volunteers to help with pre-Race planning, organization and marketing. If you are interested in helping us pre-Race, please contact [email protected].  It takes hundreds on Race day to provide the best experience to our participants.
