The Student Perspective...by Jennie Schaaf
|
There is nothing like a Friday-night football game to start the weekend with a bang and instantly give everyone attending the impression that Fall is around the corner, even if temperatures continue to reach into the upper 80s. Last week's game against Branchville was an easy victory, at least in some part due to the enthusiasm of the gathered parents and student body. What Magnet may lack in numbers, we make up for in spirit, which was evident in the unified front of whiteout clothes and the abundance of cheers the students created to give us something else to yell about.
Although rain and lightening fell nearby, the Raptor fans either pretended not to notice or did not care, as all attention was directed toward tailgate burgers and some of the incredible plays that our football team pulled off. With four more home games to go this season, the energy of the gathered fans does not seem to be waning and everyone is motivated to achieve the same level of success that led to the easy win last Friday night.

Participants Needed in Public Opinion Survey
|

Hello Raptor community,
My name is Connor Frailey and I am a senior student at AMHS. As part of my senior thesis work, I am in need of some willing participants from the AMHS community to listen to my brief informative presentation on nuclear power followed by a ten question survey (total time: 30 minutes). Your survey responses will help me determine public knowledge and opinion regarding nuclear power.
I will be holding the presentation in the lecture hall on Tuesday September 23 at 3:30pm. Snacks and drinks will be provided and students or parents of students are welcome to attend. Please contact me if you can participate at connorfrailey@gmail.com or at my phone number 843-814-1575. Also, feel free to speak directly to myself or Mrs. Renes. Thanks all and I hope to see you there!

PIE Update
|
Thank you to everyone who helped and attended our PIE meeting and Open House last week. It was so gratifying to see so many actively involved parents at the meeting and in the halls. I've heard many teachers say how excited they are for the new school year, and how thrilled they were to meet such terrific parents. YOU are what make the Magnet Family special. And the Magnet Family support groups were able to introduce themselves and hopefully, help all of us determine "who does what" in our efforts to keep Magnet running as the number one high school in South Carolina AND a Nationally Ranked High School. A big thank you goes out to Lara LeRoy, for putting the support groups and their mini-mission statements on a set of graphics. Visit the web site under the PIE tab to see the fruit of her labors.
You may also have have heard, that I made some comparisons to our Magnet world, and that of the popular PBS show, Downton Abbey. As part of this comparison, I asked that you all think about the Support Groups (Booster Club, SIC, The Foundation and PIE) as the Downstairs Staff. We all work behind the scenes (with your support!) to help keep the Upstairs Family (Magnet Teachers and Staff) running smoothly.
I also mentioned one particular teacher, Ms. Tonya McIntyre, as being similar to the Lady Rose...who is energetic and vivacious and always looking to stir things up. This gives me a segue into Ms McIntyre's nomination for a Gilded Feather.
THE GILDED FEATHER... is awarded randomly to AMHS staff and parents who regularly go "above and beyond". Ms Tonya McIntyre is one of the most positive people I have ever encountered and I never see her or leave her without receiving one of her great hugs. One of our Board members remarked, last Spring, that she had seen Ms McIntyre at Lacrosse games, in terrible weather, screaming her head off for Magnet. She is one of the most avid fans of ALL of our teams.
Mrs. Peterson mentioned that she is a "sponsor of A Different Perspective Club providing provocative speakers, organizing a lunch for the foreign exchange students, always looking for new ways to connect students to the world." She added that Ms McIntyre is "very student-centered; offering summer tutorials...always positive about AMHS and learning and keeps us all focused on what and who is important".
Students say: "Ms. McIntyre has a way of making everyone feel special each day just by saying hello and sharing her beautiful smile! "She is really hard but in a good way. I actually love her Algebra Two class, and I don't' usually love math". Mrs. Peterson added that Ms McIntyre is...an integral piece of the AMHS PIE! Cliff Woods, who directs the Academic Magnet Foundation and helped PIE fund Ms McIntyre's endeavors this summer, has this to say: "Tonya McIntyre is inspirational! Seeing a need to help new AMHS students better prepare for success, she helped create and lead the Summer Scholars Institute - an entirely new, 4-day academic orientation program. She brings that great passion and professionalism to everyday efforts at Magnet, helping any and all who come to her after school, extra-help math clinics each week and during summers. Even her emails are motivating and fun! Thank you Tonya!"
So, Ms. McIntyre, congratulations! You are awarded the first Gilded Feather of the 2014-2015 School year. You won my heart, the first time I walked in the doors of AMHS...thank you for all you do for our students and our school.
Christen Hall, PIE President

PIE Directory
|
If you made any direct changes to the 2013-2014 school directory on registration day, please email those changes to me at nzkiwi@comcast.net.
One of the example directories disappeared from the PIE Membership table on sophomore day and I have no way to see your corrections. Unless I hear from you, I cannot change your entry.
If you picked up a 2013-2014 copy of the directory during registration, please put it in an envelope addressed to Robyn Bradley and leave it with the school secretary, Ms. Duckett.
Thanks,
Robyn Bradley, PIE Membership and Directory
