THE RAPTOR REPORT
Principal Points: September

The school year is off to a terrific start! We will have our annual PIE Open House on Thursday, September 11th at 6:00 PM in the cafeteria. This is an excellent opportunity to learn about the activities PIE has planned for the year, to meet your student's teachers, and to learn of the academic expectation for the school year. I look forward to seeing everyone on Wednesday.

Convocation and PIE Parent College Awareness Night: Ms. Maria Furtado from Colleges That Change Lives, will be at AMHS on October 1st for a keynote address to the entire student body. She will spend some time with the seniors and with the guidance department and administration. In the evening, she will present for parents and guests in the cafeteria. This is an outstanding opportunity brought to AMHS through the efforts and support of PIE, and I hope everyone will come in the evening October 1st to hear Ms. Maria Furtado.

Other Coming Attractions

Code Red Lockdown Drill: In keeping with the District's emphasis on school safety, AMHS will conduct a campus-wide Code Red Lockdown Drill in mid-September. During this drill students and visitors may not enter or leave AMHS. Assisting AMHS with the drill will be officers from NCPD. We will inform everyone once the exact date and time have been established.

Early Dismissal for parent Conferences will be Wednesday, September 17th, and students will be dismissed at 1:15 PM. If you wish to schedule a conference that afternoon, please call AMHS at 746-1300.

Homecoming: Spirit Week, Pep Rally, Football Game and Homecoming Dance will take place September 29 -October 3rd, and it is always a wonderful week at Magnet.

Admissions Timeline for 2015- 2016: Applications for the next school year will be on the CCSD and AMHS websites beginning late Septembe. Specific information will be forthcoming to both CCSD and non-CCSD middle school principals.

International Dinner: October 18, 2014. Please save this date and join the AMHS students, parents and teachers for a wonderful evening of multi-cultural dishes and entertainment. This is always a special event for the AMHS community.

Graduation: Graduation ceremonies for the Class of 2015 will take place June 3, 2015 at 2:30 PM at the North Charleston Performing Arts Center.

Again, we are "up and running" on the school year and look forward to serving you and your student as best we can. Thank you for your continuing support!

Participants Needed in Public Opinion Survey

Hello Raptor community,

My name is Connor Frailey and I am a senior student at AMHS. As part of my senior thesis work, I am in need of some willing participants from the AMHS community to listen to my brief informative presentation on nuclear power followed by a ten question survey (total time: 30 minutes). Your survey responses will help me determine public knowledge and opinion regarding nuclear power.   I will be holding the presentation in the lecture hall on Tuesday September 23 at 3:30pm. Snacks and drinks will be provided and students or parents of students are welcome to attend. Please contact me if you can participate at connorfrailey@gmail.com or at my phone number 843-814-1575. Also, feel free to speak directly to myself or Mrs. Renes. Thanks all and I hope to see you there!

The Student Perspective... by Jennie Schaaf
The first few weeks of school are tough for everyone. Parents send their children off for the first or last year of high school or the two in between, glad to pass their teenagers on to the teachers. The teachers underestimate the enthusiasm of their students coming off a summer high and try to memorize 100 names in the span of a week. The students attempt to remember what school is and gradually fall into the normal routine of procrastination followed by panicking.

The best part of the first several weeks of school is seeing students adjust to the new year and their new positions and responsibilities in the school. Freshmen are overwhelmed at first, but soon learn that it is ok to ask for directions as they adapt to the experience that is high school and AMHS in particular. Many sophomores face their first APs and the stress that comes with those classes as they realize that they are no longer the "babies" of Magnet. Juniors finally confront the looming assignment that is Thesis, while Seniors experience early symptoms of senioritis with the first take-home essay assignment.

It is this collective experience during the early days of a new school year that unites the students, teachers and administrators, and encourages everyone to make the most of the next 180 days of class.

Jennie Schaaf, AMHS Senior
