THE RAPTOR REPORT
Oct. 1st Convocation and Career Symposium Features Speaker Maria Furtado

Students...are you currently in the midst of writing essays, taking standardized tests, hunting for recommendation letters or polishing your college rsum? Do you find yourself thinking, dreaming, and contemplating the college application process? Are thoughts of finding the "perfect" school circulating through your mind even though graduation is one, two, or three years away? If any or all of these scenarios sound eerily familiar then our Convocation and Career Symposium is just what you need!

Take a deep breath! October 1st, Maria Furtado, from Colleges That Change Lives http://www.ctcl.org/, will share with you her expertise in finding the right college fit for YOU! Who knows...maybe her insights will change the way you are thinking about college and the college application process. After Convocation, the Career Symposium begins in AMHS classrooms, where you will listen to your choice of speakers from a wide variety of fields. These leaders in the fields of medicine, science, law, engineering, business, art, film, academia, journalism and more will share their own educational and career journeys while offering insights into areas of study that may interest you. Juniors and Seniors will have a special focus session on essay writing from an Admissions Representative from University of Chicago.

It is bound to be a great day...one that just might change your life.

Swim Team Takes First Place at Invitational Meet

Academic Magnet's swim team competed at the Ripley's Aquarium High School Swim Invitational last weekend in Myrtle Beach, where both the boys and girls teams each took first place for the second year in a row.  The meet got off to a rousing start with the girls' mixed medley relay with Academic Magnet's girls team (Madeline McQuillan, Cassidy Rindge, Elaine Zhou and Ali DeLambo) beating out the top seeded Seahawks.

The boys' mixed medley relay team (Carter Brzezinski, Cooper Pitts, John Pavlides and Luke Beall) also bested their competitors with a strong win. The entire team then went on to dominate in individual events, with state cuts for Madison Santi, Maya Stefanelli, Jessica Baynes, Cassidy Rindge, Madeline McQuillan, Elaine Zhou, Emma Crowfoot, Campbell Babb, Trace Hall, Jack Kulp, Owen Navarro, John Pavlides, Cooper Pitts, and Carter Brzezinski.

Some of the highlights of the meet included Carter Brzezinski's win in the 200 free, Cooper Pitt's win in the 200 IM and 100 breastroke, and Elaine Zhou's dominance in the 100 fly and 100 breaststroke. The girls sealed their top placement with a strong win in the 400 free relay (made up of Emma Crowfoot, Madison Santi, Jessica Baynes and Elaine Zhou). The boys finished the meet and took the trophy with their 400 free relay team (Carter Brzezinski, Jack Kulp, Owen Navarro and Cooper Pitts), besting 11 other teams from around the state.

The swim team will next go up against Wando High School on Thursday, Aug. 28th at LTP in Mount Pleasant.

Christensen Receives Athlete of the Week Honor

AMHS freshman, Liam Christensen was recently selected by ABC News 4 as Athlete of the Week. He's the newly crowned national champion in the javelin toss. Christensen just returned from Houston where he competed in the Junior Olympics and was crowned champion in the javelin toss.

Hard work paved his path to the gold medal. "He's been working 12 months a year for the past two-and-a-half years. That's most of the work right there. Winter when it's 30 degrees and raining, he's out here throwing with me," according to the team's coach, Michael Flournoy.

Christensen picked up the javelin just a few years ago, but his goal was always the top spot on the podium. After reaching that spot, he's now looking beyond it. "Long-term I think the goal is junior worlds, maybe the Olympics if I can get there," he said.

"He's the hardest worker on the team. He comes out here, knows what he wants to do with a singular goal in mind. We've been talking about winning a national championship for over two years," Flournoy said.

SIC Update

Hello AMHS community,

We are very fortunate to have 4 wonderful support groups working together for our students and faculty. The groups are: PIE (Partners in Education), Booster Club, AMF (Academic Magnet Foundation), and SIC (School Improvement Council). The Raptor Report will have great information on each group in the coming weeks, so hopefully you can join one or more to volunteer your time, talent, and/or resources.

SIC (School Improvement Council) is a SC state mandated group comprised of Principal Judith Peterson, AMHS faculty, student representative, parents, and community leaders. The purpose of SIC is to plan, report, and ensure school performance. SIC meets monthly and our meetings are open. If you are not able to attend the monthly meeting, please consider volunteering your time and talent for one of the SIC committees.

The committees include:

  • Freshman Health Series
  • Communications
  • School Needs
  • Senior Thesis/Academic Competition
  • Diversity
  • 5-Year Strategic Plan

The next SIC meeting is Wednesday, September 24th, at 5pm in the conference room behind the front Administrative desk. Please feel free to email me with any questions.

Thank you in advance for volunteering,

Darlene Rawls (SIC Chair)
