THE RAPTOR REPORT
AMHS Teacher And Staff Appreciation Week Is April 28th - May 2nd

If you missed last week's email about this special week, please go back and take a look.

To recap, we need your help in 2 areas:

1.  We will give the teachers and staff gift cards again, but not from grocery stores this time.  Please send one $10 or $20 gift card to school in an envelope labeled Mrs. Linnie Duckett, Teacher Appreciation.  If you can send them by Friday, April 11, that would be fantastic.  We are looking for restaurants, movies, yogurt, ice cream, coffee, or anywhere you enjoy going (except grocery!).  If you cannot do this by Friday, we will collect one more time the week after Spring Break.

2.  On Tuesday, Apr. 29, we will host a seated luncheon for our Teachers and Staff.  We usually provide foods made by parents, or purchased by parents from gourmet stores like Whole Foods, Everyday Gourmet, etc. (we'd like to avoid Costco, and grocery store products).  We need lots of food to feed over 60 folks!  Please let us know if you can provide donations of 15-20 small servings of
Grain, bean, fruit, veggie, chicken, egg, etc. salads
Casseroles, main dishes of any sort
Fresh Breads, spreads, etc.
Attractive paper/plastic goods (white, clear or spring colors- dessert, and lunch plates, 16 oz cups, utensils, nice napkins, also ziploc bags for leftovers)
A few more desserts

Please email [email protected] with suggested donations.

The luncheon is at noon and we will have a cart at the bus loop for drop off that morning, and one at the front desk.

Thank you!

Magnet Students Win Awards at Junior Academy of Science Competition

Saturday, April 5 was the South Carolina Junior Academy of Science competition.  Irene Cheng, Rachael Dawson, Callie Hartsell, Zach Hilliard, Dana Krzyzaniak, and Edward Leber presented their senior thesis research.  There were 300 students in 30 categories representing schools around the state.  Callie and Dana won first place in their category for their research paper.  Zach won first place in his category for both his paper and his oral presentation.  This makes him eligible to win a trip to Nationals in San Jose.  That announcement will be made sometime later this month.

Attend Raptor Soccer Game to Support Fight Against Colon Cancer

Greetings Raptor Nation!

My name is Jason Hamil, and I am the head coach for the boys varsity soccer team. I have a special announcement regarding our April 5th home boys/girls doubleheader versus River Bluff High School.

This is a special and honorary game. At the beginning of the season, I found out that a close friend of mine, Ben Pinkerton, was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer. This is the same disease that claimed the life of my maternal grandmother in the late 1980s. Ben has been a friend and mentor to me since the mid-2000s when he was an assistant at NC State and I was at the College of Charleston. We have also grown up through the ranks of SoccerPlus Goalkeeper School. He has had a major influence on my coaching career especially when it comes to training GKers. Ben and his wife Karla are expecting their first child this summer. Ben's family and friends are using #PinkStrong in social media to show their support.

In order to show our support for Ben, I am asking that everyone in attendance for the April 5 game wear dark blue which is the official support color for colon cancer. The AMHS teams will be wearing special dark blue jerseys with the term "peloton" on the back since Ben is an avid distance cyclist.

These games stand to be highly competitive with the girls kicking off at 11am and the boys at 1pm.

In order to help streamline the donation process, all donations are being handled through the Give Forward website at

https://www.giveforward.com/fundraiser/f8z3/pinkstrong

This money goes directly to Ben and his family.

Here is a link to Ben's blog

http://pinkertonsjourney.blogspot.com/

My goal is to raise $750 through this game.

I thank everyone for their support for Ben through wearing dark blue and any small donation that you may be able to send his way!

CPR/AED Training Available

Dear AMHS students, faculty, coaches,  and families,

In a joint effort by PIE and SIC we are partnering with CharlestonCPR to have as many students, faculty, coaches, and parents become certified in CPR and AED use. PIE has purchased 20 AHA books that will be in Linnie Duckett's office to sign out for 5 days at a time for free. You must have the book to attend the class. PIE has also agreed to pay for tuition for AMHS teachers that attend the training.

You can click the link below to register and sign up for a class. MAKE sure you put AMHS in the comments. The preferred class for CPR/AED training is Heartsaver CPR/AED Course. If there is a specific group of 20 students/teachers/parents from AMHS that would like to block out a 3 hour class on a Saturday, Charleston CPR will accommodate.

By attending the class, you will receive education from a Nationally Registered Emergency Medical Technician, you will receive certification at the end of class, and you will be certified to use an AED and perform CPR.

The cost is $35 for students/parents/coaches.  The book may be used free for 5 days and must be returned for the future students use.

The Student Perspective...
by Jennie Schaaf

April 6th was Prom, held at the South Carolina Aquarium downtown.  Almost as much fun as the dance itself were the dinners that many groups decided to share before driving to the event and the general sharing of pictures on social media sites as the groups or couples posed in any one of the thousand beautiful Charleston locations.  With both floors open to wandering around, most of the people at the aquarium on Saturday chose to enjoy the animals and paintings in the hallways.  The dance floor by the bottom of the Great Ocean Tank was lively the entire evening with dancers to a variety of music, but almost even more successful was the photo booth in the main hall, hurricane simulator, and scattered chocolate fondue fountains.  The entrance to the building was a steady stream of red carpet attire the whole evening and several areas soon filled up as groups spontaneously formed, resembling a large cocktail party.  The evening was a great success!

Baseball Team Beats Bishop England
Congratulations to the baseball team on their first victory against Bishop England. Jake Sossamon pitched a great game and Adam Ackerman hit a massive triple to score the key runs and lead the team to a 9-8 victory.
Volunteer Opportunity
Miracle League needs volunteers on Saturday May 3 from 12-2. Students would help kids with Down's Syndrome bat and run the bases during a baseball game. Students can email Megan Verner at [email protected] for more information or go to their website at charlestonmiracleleague.org.
