THE RAPTOR REPORT
AMHS Teacher And Staff Appreciation Committee Needs Your Help!

AMHS Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week is April 28th - May 2nd this year. Because of your generosity and PIE's hard work, we have been able to treat them to some nice things throughout the school year. However, this is the BIG WEEK that we really like to let them know how much we think of them. The committee has some surprises in store for them each day, and will be handling most of the events so that you don't have to do too much. We do need help with two important events/gifts.

First, on Tuesday, April 29th at noon, we will host our now-famous, annual seated luncheon in the cafeteria lobby.  We will have pretty tablecloths (thanks to Laura Alberg), floral arrangements, music, and delicious foods prepared lovingly by AMHS families.  WE NEED DONATIONS!! Because Spring Break is in the middle of April, it would be nice to hear from you now if you are willing to send food/drinks/paper products, etc.  We ask for homemade, or gourmet-purchased food items (please no Costco/grocery store premade foods) in quantities prepared for 15-20 people, flower arrangements for the tables (preferably ones that can be auctioned to teachers at the end of the meal), jugs of tea, lemonade, pretty paper goods in spring colors (lunch or dessert plates, napkins, 16 oz clear cups, plastic utensils).  We will be serving about 65 people.  Please email campcammie@gmail.com with your suggested donation.

Second, on one of the final days of the week, we would like to have another gift card give away. During Thanksgiving, we did grocery stores. This time, we would like to do something different. If each family could send in one $10 or $20 gift card to a place that they frequent or enjoy...anything from your favorite restaurant, yogurt shop, coffee shop, movie theater, gift shop, etc. Anything you enjoy, one of our teachers is sure to enjoy as well. You are always welcome to add a little note to the card to say thanks and who the donor is!

It would be great to get these cards and hear that you can help with the luncheon donations sometime before Spring Break, which begins on Sat. April 12.

Thank you!

Attend Raptor Soccer Game to Support Fight Against Colon Cancer

Greetings Raptor Nation!

My name is Jason Hamil, and I am the head coach for the boys varsity soccer team. I have a special announcement regarding our April 5th home boys/girls doubleheader versus River Bluff High School.

This is a special and honorary game. At the beginning of the season, I found out that a close friend of mine, Ben Pinkerton, was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer. This is the same disease that claimed the life of my maternal grandmother in the late 1980s. Ben has been a friend and mentor to me since the mid-2000s when he was an assistant at NC State and I was at the College of Charleston. We have also grown up through the ranks of SoccerPlus Goalkeeper School. He has had a major influence on my coaching career especially when it comes to training GKers. Ben and his wife Karla are expecting their first child this summer. Ben's family and friends are using #PinkStrong in social media to show their support.

In order to show our support for Ben, I am asking that everyone in attendance for the April 5 game wear dark blue which is the official support color for colon cancer. The AMHS teams will be wearing special dark blue jerseys with the term "peloton" on the back since Ben is an avid distance cyclist.

These games stand to be highly competitive with the girls kicking off at 11am and the boys at 1pm.

In order to help streamline the donation process, all donations are being handled through the Give Forward website at

https://www.giveforward.com/fundraiser/f8z3/pinkstrong

This money goes directly to Ben and his family.

Here is a link to Ben's blog

http://pinkertonsjourney.blogspot.com/

My goal is to raise $750 through this game.

I thank everyone for their support for Ben through wearing dark blue and any small donation that you may be able to send his way!

CPR/AED Training Available

Dear AMHS students, faculty, coaches,  and families,

In a joint effort by PIE and SIC we are partnering with CharlestonCPR to have as many students, faculty, coaches, and parents become certified in CPR and AED use. PIE has purchased 20 AHA books that will be in Linnie Duckett's office to sign out for 5 days at a time for free. You must have the book to attend the class. PIE has also agreed to pay for tuition for AMHS teachers that attend the training.

You can click the link below to register and sign up for a class. MAKE sure you put AMHS in the comments. The preferred class for CPR/AED training is Heartsaver CPR/AED Course. If there is a specific group of 20 students/teachers/parents from AMHS that would like to block out a 3 hour class on a Saturday, Charleston CPR will accommodate.

By attending the class, you will receive education from a Nationally Registered Emergency Medical Technician, you will receive certification at the end of class, and you will be certified to use an AED and perform CPR.

The cost is $35 for students/parents/coaches.  The book may be used free for 5 days and must be returned for the future students use.

PIE Update

Thank you again, to everyone who helped to make the PIE Auction Party a HUGE success! Susan Kilpatrick, Heidi Brown, Francie Reding and Lara LeRoy were the backbone of a great group of parents who managed a tremendous amount of organizing and executing. Check the PIE tab later this week for a photo gallery.

Some of the most memorable events were also what make Magnet the special place that it is, for instance:   Mrs. Peterson cast one bid for a live auction item, she dropped out fairly quickly as the item escalated in price. One wonderful family, noting her bid, managed to win the item. And guess what they did? I know you guessed correctly; because you know Magnet Magic...they gifted it to Mrs. Peterson. It gets even better...the family who had donated the package...of course (they are under the spell of Magnet Magic)...decided to extend it to BOTH Mrs. Peterson and the generous couple who won the bid. As Mrs. Peterson says time again, "Magnet parents are special...they are truly amazing!"

Another fun story from the big Event...one wonderful parent, bought a "bracelet" (sold for $20 each to be a part of a game called "Heads or Tails") and gave it to Mrs. Laura Eicher (Biology teacher). When the game ended...guess who the LUCKY winner was?? Yep, Mrs. Eicher...who has probably spent it all on bike parts and running shoes. And it all started with a gift! GO Magnet!

PIE raised a good bit of money, thanks to our generous sponsors and everyone who attended or donated or cheered us on from the sidelines. It was in the $60,000 neighborhood (the tally is not exact yet), and it will be well spent on the WISH LISTS and AP Scholarships for our teachers, and many, many things for our hard working student body as well. We'll keep you updated on where it will be spent to help Magnet's immediate needs. Meanwhile, we are already working on next year's PARTY...look for something completely different...and start thinking about Feburary 7th as the likely date. If you want to JUMP IN, we love new ideas, and value creative solutions! Magnet IS a Magical place, after all!

Christen Hall, PIE President

Gilded Feather Award

The Gilded Feather has landed, discreetly as ever, on a parent who has been actively helping AMHS students for over a decade.

Mrs. Nina Hoffman, wife of Stanley, is the mother of 4 past and present Magnet students and the current PIE Vice President. Nina has a Masters degree in Health Administration and received her JD from Brooklyn Law School. She is a practicing attorney who focuses on issues relating to elders. She has also served as a Magnet Historian for PIE. Her youngest son Nick, a Senior, is Captain of the Academic Team and will be graduating in June. The halls of Academic Magnet will feel empty without a Hoffman in attendance next year!

Mrs. Peterson contributes the following: "Nina Hoffman: always ready to help, whether it is the International Dinner or National Honor Society Induction. Her energy and positive outlook encourage others to participate. In her addresses at the NHS Inductions, she exhorts the students to reach for high goals, maintain their individual integrity, and try out new ideas and activities. She has been a supporter of AMHS for over 12 years  and has served also as the PTA (now PIE) president. The "Gilded Feather" will rest easily on her shoulders."

These are the remarks that Mr. Douglas Murphy (Government and Economics teacher) gave, regarding Nina, at the recent AMHS induction of the National Honor Society:

"Tonight we are very fortunate indeed to have as our guest speaker, a woman embodies the National Honor Society principles of scholarship, leadership, service, and character.

An attorney who advocates for senior citizens, she was a member of the Task Force that created the Charleston Mayor's Office on Aging. She served for two years on the AMHS School Improvement Council and has held various positions on the board of AMHS PIE. She is currently Vice President on the PIE Board.

We, as Magnet parents, students and teachers, are all honored to have served these years with Nina at Magnet. Congratulations Nina and thank you for your dedication!

Early Release Day April 8
Tuesday, April 8th is an Early Release Day for parent conferences between 1:45 pm - 4:45 pm. Parents may call the school to make an appointment with specific teachers. (746-1300).
Attention Junior Parents
It's almost time for juniors to head out to the Nantahala Outdoor Center for hiking, whitewater rafting, and fun! Juniors will leave at noon on Wednesday, April 9 and return to Charleston in the afternoon on Saturday, April 12. We have distributed packing lists to students; see the attached form for your information. Students will need a small amount of spending money for meals on the trip up, but probably no more than $50.

Volunteer Opportunity
Miracle League needs volunteers on Saturday May 3 from 12-2. Students would help kids with Down's Syndrome bat and run the bases during a baseball game. Students can email Megan Verner at miracleleagueed@gmail.com for more information or go to their website at charlestonmiracleleague.org.
The MDA Muscle Walk was a Big Success!

Many thanks to the Magnet community!  Academic Magnet students, faculty, and parents gave tremendous support to Caleb Sizemore and his MDA Muscle Walk team, leading the team to raise over $6,000 for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy research.  A host of Magnet students walked with Caleb at the River Dog stadium this past Saturday. They joined 15 other teams and hundreds of participants for the symbolic walk around the stadium and for some fun activities.  The Charleston MDA Muscle Walk raised $40,000 this year to support those with neuromuscular diseases in the Low Country.  We look forward to next year's Muscle Walk.

Prom Time - Help Needed
Parents, we have a parent who is donating a chocolate fountain and the chocolate!! We are asking if parents can donate large marshmallows, rice crispy treats (cut into chunks), pound cake (cut into chunks), pretzels for dunking into chocolate, whole strawberries, fresh pineapple (cut into chunks), fruit, cheese & cracker trays.

The food needs to be delivered to the aquarium between 5:00 and 6:00pm on Saturday, April 5th.

We can't do this without your help - A BIG THANKS TO ALL OF YOU!!
