Principal Points: March
|
17 days until Spring Break, which begins at the end of the day on Friday, April 11th. These 17 days do include Friday, March 28th, which is now a full school day for students. These days will fly by, for they are filled with academic and athletic challenges and events. (Please see the calendar below.)
As we prepare to close out an outstanding school year, we are immersed in the AMHS "testing season," and we do need help with the next series of tests: HSAP. The state's testing protocol calls for a monitor in each room to assist the test administrator, and we hope you may be able to help out in this role on April 1, 2, and/or 3 from 8:00 - 11:00. We will need 8 -10 volunteers each day, so if you can assist, please contact Ms. Taylor, Ms. Mettler, Ms. Pinckney or me via email or phone.
April 1, 2, 3: HSAP Testing for Grade 10
April 14-18: Spring Break
May 1: Booster Club's Athletic Recognition Ceremony
May 5-15: AP Tests
May 16: AP Picnic and Battle of the Bands
May 19-21: End of Course Tests for Grades 9, and 11 (English I, Biology I, US History)

The testing season is extremely busy and demanding, but it is part of our program, and the students will be well-prepared for each test. If you have any questions about the next weeks, please call us at 746-1300. Thank you for your continued support of our efforts to offer the best possible academic program we can.

CPR/AED Training Available
|
Dear AMHS students, faculty, coaches, and families,
In a joint effort by PIE and SIC we are partnering with CharlestonCPR to have as many students, faculty, coaches, and parents become certified in CPR and AED use. PIE has purchased 20 AHA books that will be in Linnie Duckett's office to sign out for 5 days at a time for free. You must have the book to attend the class. PIE has also agreed to pay for tuition for AMHS teachers that attend the training.
You can click the link below to register and sign up for a class. MAKE sure you put AMHS in the comments. The preferred class for CPR/AED training is Heartsaver CPR/AED Course. If there is a specific group of 20 students/teachers/parents from AMHS that would like to block out a 3 hour class on a Saturday, Charleston CPR will accommodate.
By attending the class, you will receive education from a Nationally Registered Emergency Medical Technician, you will receive certification at the end of class, and you will be certified to use an AED and perform CPR.
The cost is $35 for students/parents/coaches. The book may be used free for 5 days and must be returned for the future students use.

The Student Perspective by Jennie Schaaf
|
Only at Academic Magnet is the date March 14th almost as famous as the 4th of July. March 14th, or 3.14, represents the first three digits of the irrational number Pi, a number that we high school math students eventually learn to love. For this 4th annual Pi Day celebration, the theme was "Live and Let Pi," a take on a classic James Bond movie. During class changes, the loudspeakers played "pi-themed" music such as American Pie and Sir Paul McCartney's Live and Let Die.
This year, the school broke up the festivities over several days to ensure participation and the presence of an audience at each event. These events included a 3.14 mile long relay, basketball shootout, recitation of digits and artistic opportunities found in homemade posters, cards, and themed songs, videos, and poems. Classes were shortened by a highly appreciated 5 whole minutes to give an hour-long lunch for a mile-long walk around the school, purchase of slices of pie, and a school-wide picnic in the courtyard serenaded by student musicians.
Everyone enjoyed the annual festivity to break up several long weeks until spring break and looks forward to next year's celebration when the date will be March 14th, 2015, or, as the number Pi goes, 3.1415.
Jennie Schaaf, AMHS Junior

MDA Muscle Walk Scheduled for March 29th
|
Please help support one of our own and the Muscular Dystrophy Association at the MDA Muscle Walk at the River Dogs stadium on Saturday, March 29th from 11am-2pm.
Caleb Sizemore, an Academic Magnet junior, has organized a Muscle Walk team to help raise funds for MDA research for Duchennes Muscular Dystrophy (the disease which affects him) and to raise awareness of the impact of neuromuscular diseases (such as Duchennes and ALS, which is Lou Gehrig's disease) on so many individuals and families. Please come join Caleb, friends, family, and dozens of other teams in the non-competitive walk around the stadium to support those with muscle diseases.
MDA is a voluntary health agency that funds cutting-edge neuromuscular disease research; ensures that all Americans affected by these diseases receive treatment and critical care; and serves as a voice for families with neuromuscular diseases. MDA has built the nation's only neuromuscular clinic network, with over 200 MDA clinics, which provides expert treatment for those with neuromuscular diseases. MDA also provides free summer camps designed specifically for kids with muscle diseases.
Academic Magnet raised over $1,000 last year for MDA, through contributions to Caleb's Muscle Walk team and through MDA Shamrock sales. Caleb and his family and friends have raised over $3,500 so far this year for his Muscle Walk team.
You can join his team and can donate to his team at this link: Caleb's Cure. Sign-up and donation forms are also available in Mrs. Colon's, Ms. Novinger's, and Mrs. Kelly's room.
Please join us - and help us to Make a Muscle and Make a Difference.

Calling all Parents...
Prom is Almost Here! |
Prom will be held at the aquarium this year and the theme is "An Evening at the Yacht Club". If you have any yacht or boat related items, palms, etc. we could use to decorate, please let us know. We also need twinkle lights. ALSO - parents have traditionally provided the food and drinks for prom, except for last year when we rented a venue that required us to purchase their food.
Please consider providing desserts (a chocolate fountain would be awesome - we had one last year and the kids loved it!) and fruit and cheese/crackers. If someone has a chocolate fountain, we wouldn't need anything other than chunks of pound cake, cut up fruit, rice crispy treats, marshmallows, etc. for the kids to dunk in the chocolate. Thank you for all your support! Contact:
