The Student Perspective by Jennie Schaaf

Last Wednesday's Talent Show was an incredible collaboration of musicians, dancers, singers, and comedians made all the better by the comments of hosts Kellen Datta and Jackson Carter. With the advent of social media in most award shows and other programs, the hosts decided to refer to Twitter frequently as well as include shout outs paid for by students to bide time in between acts.

Of the performers, several chose to sing and play guitar, either in a group or individually, and within this section of students, some sang original songs while others provided their own twists to popular or favorite songs. Both upperclassmen and underclassmen were represented, including freshmen Amelia Sizemore as the only dancer and Claire Conway, a singer and musician whose performance won her first place.

The final performance of AMHS's band, Heartfelt Hinges, brought both excitement and sadness, while the two stand-up comedy acts were humorous and, as requested by the judges, tasteful. This year's Talent Show served as another excellent example of Magnet's diversity and strength in both academics and performing arts, and was a great distraction for the teachers and students leading up to the final months of exams and schools.

SC Gifted Education Programming may face Changes
Recent news regarding programming for gifted education is cause for concern. There may be changes in the programming for gifted education, including the elimination of EIA mandate for high achieving students, with all funding going into one pot in the EFA; the elimination of GT in the arts and the elimination of funding for GT endorsement courses for teachers and AP courses. Please contact your legislators to voice your concern. Click here for a contact list of legislators.
Calling all Parents...
Prom is Almost Here!
Prom will be held at the aquarium this year and the theme is "An Evening at the Yacht Club".  If you have any yacht or boat related items, palms, etc. we could use to decorate, please let us know.  We also need twinkle lights.  ALSO - parents have traditionally provided the food and drinks for prom, except for last year when we rented a venue that required us to purchase their food.

Please consider providing desserts (a chocolate fountain would be awesome - we had one last year and the kids loved it!) and fruit and cheese/crackers.  If someone has a chocolate fountain, we wouldn't need anything other than chunks of pound cake, cut up fruit, rice crispy treats, marshmallows, etc. for the kids to dunk in the chocolate.  Thank you for all your support!  Contact:
Join the Heart of the Lion Team in the Walk for Water

Join the Heart Of The Lion Team, which honors the life of Marley Lion and is joining together to make a difference in the lives of millions of women and children in developing countries that walk miles to retrieve water.

Thousands of people begin the walk with an empty bucket (provided) in Cannon Park, downtown Charleston. The walk weaves it's way to the water front at White Point Gardens (The Battery). Participants fill buckets with water and return to Cannon Park. This 3.5 mile walk gives participants a glimpse of what people do all over the world on a daily basis.

Sign up for the Heart of the Lion Team at WaterMissions.org/walk. Click Join a Team and enter Marley Lion. Donations are welcome and can be made on this page as well.
