The Guilded Feather goes to Mr. Gary Weart

The next Gilded Feather award goes to a teacher of a generation of AMHS students, Mr. Gary Weart. He has acted as substitute teacher for the past several years and has earned a place in the hearts of both students and faculty.

Mrs. Peterson writes: "Gary Weart has served the entire AMHS community by "pinch-hitting" in many classrooms in all curricular areas, by assisting with the large-scale testing programs, and by attending athletic and arts events. Mr. Weart is a Raptor in the very best sense of the word. He will help in any way he can to make our days better for the students and the faculty. He is a life-long educator, and we are very glad he is part of our school community."

A peer states that "Gary Weart has become an integral part of the Magnet family. He may be considered a substitute, however he is everything but a substitute. In the minds of our students 'he is an accepted member of the AMHS faculty with all the rights, privileges and honors thereof.'  What I mean is, that our students accept, trust and look to Gary the same as they do any teacher or member of administration. He is a very important part of our family and without him we would be left with a very large void to try and fill.

Quotes from the students include (but are not limited to) the following accolades: After a class with Mr. Weart there is no way you don't walk out of the classroom smarter than when you walked in. He is the kind of sub teachers would fight for. A substitute fills in for something. Because of this Mr. Weart is not a substitute, he is an addition. Mr. Weart does not stand in for other teachers, he adds his own piece to magnet and AMHS would be half as happy walking down the hallways without him. Other student comments included: I love him! Best person on the planet; he knows how to make your day 10 times better. Always in a good mood, genuine kindness. Mr. Weart is practically famous among the students. He is also a very wonderful man!!

Many of us as parents have met and worked alongside Gary Weart as we work at the desk or proctor tests, but few people know that among his many talents, he is the founder a group called SAVE, which stands for "Students Against Violence Everywhere." Their Mission,as a public nonprofit organization, is to strive to decrease the potential for violence in our schools and communities by promoting meaningful student involvement, education and service opportunities in an effort to provide safer environments for youth. There are chapters of SAVE in 50 states and at least seven foreign countries! Mr. Weart received the Presidential Service Award  from President Bill Clinton after working tirelessly to promote SAVE Chapters in every state to encourage safe learning environments, homes and communities.

Gary is also the author of a book, A Teacher Shoots Back; Targeting School Violence, a memoir about his incredible adventures (he worked in Army counter-intelligence and carried the Olympic Torch for both the 1996 and 2002 Olympics) and a chronicle of how he feels about family values and the necessity of cooperation.

I'll close with a quote by Albert Pike, which Mr. Weart uses in the Introduction of his memoir: "What we have done for ourselves dies with us, what we have done for others and the world, remains...and is immortal."

Mr. Weart, your many years of service to community and your dedication to Magnet students have earned you an "immortal" Gilded Feather. Thank you!
