Principal Points: February
|
We have started the new semester well (except for the weather) with an inspiring and challenging message from Jennifer Pharr Davis and with a very positive and uplifting "Coming Home" week. So, the AMHS community is poised and ready for our important "next steps":
Registration for course
selection 2014- 2015
Advanc-Ed Accreditation
Registration
Believe it or not, we have begun to prepare for the 2014- 2015 school year!
The first step includes student registration for courses, and we will begin that process with pre-registration student and parent meetings on Thursday, February 20, 2014 at AMHS:
5:30-6:15 pm 10th grade student & parents
6:45-7:30 pm 9th grade student & parents
Evaluation
Every five years, schools and colleges are reviewed for national accreditation, and AMHS will take part in that process this year. The process involves several activities, and we have begun two of them:
A randomly-selected group of 60 seniors are taking part in the High School That Work (HSTW) Assessment which includes a student survey and tests in math, reading and science. The tests will be scored, and the results become part of our "self-portrait."
Faculty and staff have begun a thorough "Self-Assessment," and that information will be forwarded to the evaluation team and also assist us as we plan for the future.
The next piece of the "accreditation pie" is one with which I need your help/input.It is the parent survey and student survey, and it will be online. We will be forwarding information and will ask you to access the link and complete the survey, for your thoughts, ideas, and perceptions are critical to our reflections and planning for the future. We really value and need your input.Thank you in advance for thoughtful and honest responses. Please, be on the lookout for additional details!
As always Magnet is electric with academic, athletic and service activities, and we are looking ahead to Spring and all the energy it brings us just in time for AP tests and graduation, June 4, 2014.

The Student Perspective
by Jennie Schaaf |
We had our second spirit week of the year this past week at Magnet to celebrate Coming Home for the basketball teams.
On Decade Day, the grades chose different eras and turned Magnet into a clash of 1920's, 50's, 60's, and 80's. There was a 1980's themed aerobic session and Thriller music at lunch, which encouraged everyone to break out their inner Michael Jackson.
Tuesday was Superhero Day, and hordes of Batmen, Supermen, and other Marvel and DC superheroes swarmed the school as well as some other varieties of caped crusaders. Seniors terrorized the other grades by dressing up in black as villains.
Charleston Day came back this year by popular vote and heavy Southern accents appeared to compliment the flowing dresses and Derby hats.
One of the most successful days of Spirit Week was Olympics Day, a theme that put everyone in the mood for the Winter Olympics in Sochi. In the Junior grade alone, the Jamaican bobsled team and a curling team that simulated the sport with skateboards and heavy rocks were represented, and other students brought sports equipment or medals to symbolize a particular sport or athlete.
Coming Home day was just as exciting as Homecoming day as freshmen dressed for Olympus, sophomores for the Red Carpet, juniors stepped back to a middle school dance, and seniors transformed into pirates. The day concluded with an incredible pep rally featuring performances by the Dirty Birds and the AMHS Dance Team, and basketball competitions for members of Student Council.
