THE RAPTOR REPORT
Think FUN, think Auction, think Spring, think PARTY!
Magnet students are special, right? Well let me tell you this, their parents are REALLY special people too!  So special that PIE is throwing YOU (Magnet parents) a party!  Saturday March 22nd,  7 pm at the Citadel Alumni House will be the party you won't want to miss!

Invitations will go out late next week and the Raptor Report will put up a "PURCHASE TICKETS click here" once those invites are out.

The evening begins with a CHAMPAGNE greeting and features music, cocktails  and  a selection of appetizers; you will be mingling with many of the Magnet people who make our school special. The stage is set to SHOP as well, with an opportunity to peruse the tables of the Silent Auction while preparing  for a WILD and CRAZY time with professional Auctioneer Tom Crawford who promises to make our LIVE event.

This year's theme is DREAM BIG...and we are pulling together a DREAM list for just about everything on your WISH list!  Keep checking the Raptor for featured selections of items that will be on our tables as well as within our midst (hint hint).

Can you ask merchants where you shop and eat to donate merchandise or a gift certificate? Do you have a friend who is creative? Do you own a vacation home or have a contact who can arrange an exciting adventure?

Students Enjoy Raptor Basketball Victories

At Academic Magnet High School, Mr. Wright, the school's creative writing teacher, challenges his students to express their essence in a memoir using only six words. In a world of excess, he strives through this simple exercise to inspire some deep soul searching. What these young adults come up with is nothing short of genius. They have compiled their memoirs into the 2013 Six-Word Memoir Film. Watch it now on youtube at:

The (New) Gilded Raptor Feather Award

We would like to recognize PEOPLE WHO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN OUR AMHS STUDENTS' LIVES - the un-sung heroes of our school, who through their gifts of time and talent, help make Magnet the wonderful, spirited place that it is. Please contact myself, or Cathy Cocolas if you know of members of staff or parent volunteers, who have touched YOUR student's lives in a special way. With a "Gilded Feather" we'd like to spotlight as many outstanding individuals as possible.

This week's Gilded Feather has landed on the shoulder of Jill Leber, mother of Edward (class of 2014). Jill has served for the past few years on the PIE Board as the chair of "Thinkers in Residence."   Most recently, you probably heard your students talking about the Convocation speaker, Jennifer Pharr Davis, the "2012 National Geographic Adventurer of the Year" who holds several records as a hiker/adventurer. Jill Leber found out about this amazing woman, did a little research and was able to schedule her to spend an entire day at Magnet. She has discovered and hosted many speakers over the past several years, all of them have had an impact on the students. In addition to seeking, scheduling and hosting these speakers, Jill has become quite the guru of HEALTHY snacks for the "topic" class (typically, the Convocation speakers will spend an additional hour with either the Junior or Senior class after addressing the entire student body). This is Jill's last year with us at Magnet, as her only son graduates and moves on to the college of his dreams. I think that Mrs. Peterson is sad to see the Leber family go. She told me recently she enjoys working with her because she has so much energy and enthusiasm, and she gets it when it comes to finding the right speakers for our school.

Jill puts an amazing amount of energy and effort into enriching the minds (and bodies!) of our AMHS students, and for this we are grateful!

Congratulations Jill Leber, you are the charter member of the Gilded Feather!
