The Student Perspective
by Jennie Schaaf

At our second convocation of the year, we had the privilege of listening to the stories of Jennifer Pharr Davis - a professional hiker, writer, owner of Blue Ridge Hiking Company, and devoted wife and mother.

Beginning her speech with her decision to hike the Appalachian trail following her graduation from college, she told a story that was both anecdotal and inspirational, demonstrating that even the smallest decisions can be significant, and encouraging us to take advantage of goals to achieve what we aspire to be or do.

She explained that even though she has earned many titles or set records for her endurance hiking, it was possible to set these standards because of a support system that worked well as a team.

Jennifer Pharr Davis inspired us to seek out a life that makes us happy and be adventurous, even if our definition of adventurous doesn't mean hiking over 2,000 miles Georgia to Maine.

Later, with the Junior class, she connected the duration of some of her hikes, to the thesis projects required by Magnet, and suggested that both demanded hard work and would leave us completely drained, but fulfilled and proud of the work we had accomplished.

Certainly we could all use someone like Jennifer Pharr Davis in our lives to show that the biggest part of any project is the first step and to demonstrate the confidence that comes from pursuing something you love and following it through until the end.
