Engineers Needed!

The AMHS Technology Department is looking for some volunteers to serve on our advisory board.  In order to have a certified engineering program, AMHS needs to have an active advisory board composed of engineers and (hopefully) college instructors.  The advisory board meets a few times a year to provide guidance to the engineering courses, possibly create business partnerships and be a resource to our students.  Non-engineers are also welcome.  Anyone interested should email Jon Phillips at jon_phillips@charleston.k12.sc.us.

Support AMHS Varsity Volleyball Sr. Night Oct. 22

Please support the AMHS Varsity Volleyball team on senior night. Game time is 6 PM, October 22.  AMHS vs Woodland.  This is the last game of the season!

The Student Perspective...
by Jennie Schaaf

This Wednesday, schedules were changed to accommodate PSAT testing.  Freshmen, Sophomores, and Juniors took the PSAT for several hours in the morning while seniors attended a seminar on ethics.  Due to the extensive testing, we had an extended lunch and the yearly Powderpuff matches.  Freshmen defeated the Sophomores in the first round and Juniors beat the seniors, with the Juniors winning the championship game against the Freshmen.  The manleaders for each grade got into their roles, encouraging the bystanders to cheer for their grades.  Under expert guidance from the student coaches on each team, every grade played hard and enjoyed the break from school as well as the classes afterwards which were all half as long as normal.

PIE Notes

Greetings! I hope this finds everyone HEALTHY!  Be sure and get your flu shots, it seems to be going around!

I can't wait for our International Dinner this Saturday night! It's loads of fun, even if you can only stop in for a quick visit and bite to eat. Please try to come; it really is a social gathering meant to bring our Magnet Family together...sort of like a big family Thanksgiving, with none of the crazy drama!

Next Wednesday night, Oct 23rd, will be our last PIE College Awareness night for 2013. Join us in the LECTURE Hall at 6 pm to hear a short "College Admissions 101" presentation from Suzette Stille,

the Director of Admissions for the College of Charleston. At 6:30, Ms Stille will be joined on the stage by Ms Clare Law, an IECA professional member and a Certified Educational Planner and Mr. Tom Jahn, a Financial Advisor with Morgan Stanley. They will act as a FORUM and will answer questions from the audience about the College Admissions and Funding process. At 7 pm, you will have an opportunity to attend a 30 minute breakout session (held in nearby classrooms) with the individual panel members. This will give parents the chance to engage more deeply in the topic which interests them the most. The PIE Board is pleased to offer you these evenings that help bring the questions and answers together about our students' collegiate goals. We will be sending out a Survey Monkey later in the year to hear what you would like to have us present in the Spring.

Again, thank you all for everything you do to support our school. We will see you at the International Dinner in the Caf on Saturday and at the Lecture Hall on Wednesday!

Christen Hall
PIE President

Featured Speaker Bios

Suzette Stille

Suzette has seen significant growth and change at the College of Charleston since she began working here as an Admissions Counselor 25 years ago. Originally from Due West, SC, Suzette comes from a family of educators and routinely interacts professionally with both her brother, who is VP for Enrollment at Wofford College, and her sister, who is a Guidance Counselor at Wando High School. There are lots of good family discussions about hot topics in the world of college admission! Suzette also enjoys the great restaurants of Charleston and any opportunity that she has to travel. Suzette's admissions tip: Make sure that you take the lead in your college admissions process! During this time, you will develop good organizational and time management skills and most importantly, you'll discover more about yourself. All of these qualities will help you become a successful and happy college student!

Claire Law

Claire Law is an IECA professional member and a Certified Educational Planner, the mark of distinction which means she has achieved the profession's most rigorous educational standards and adheres to a strict code of ethics.  She is the co-author of "Find the Perfect College for YOU!" based on personality type in college. She is a parent of three college graduates, and has been in private practice for fourteen years. She holds a Bachelor Degree in Psychology and English Literature from Carleton University and a Master of Science in Human Development

Tom Jahn

Making college decisions can be very stressful. Tom Jahn hopes that he can be a resource that will help with your financial planning. He will address educational planning as part of a complete financial plan; 529 accounts and plans for college students. Tom is also happy to discuss his experience as an Air Force Academy graduate and military pilot.

He is a wealth manager and CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ (CFP) at Morgan Stanley.

Today more than ever, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professionals are an essential resource. From budgeting, to planning for retirement, to saving for education, to managing your taxes and your insurance coverage, "finances" doesn't mean just one thing for most Americans - and "financial planning" means much more than just investing. Bringing all the pieces of your financial life together is a challenging task. Although many professionals may call themselves "financial planners," CFP

professionals have completed extensive training and experience requirements and are held to rigorous ethical standards. They understand all the complexities of the changing financial climate. The CFP certification is widely recognized as the standard of excellence for financial advisors.

Tom graduated from the United States Air Force Academy earning a Bachelor of Science in Business Management.  He also earned a Master's Degree in Business Administration from the Eli Broad School of Business at Michigan State University.
