The Student Perspective...
by Jennie Schaaf

Last week, the Academic Magnet students and staff enjoyed a full spirit week leading up to Friday's homecoming game against Ridgeland. On Monday, two, three or a group of people dressed alike for Twin Day. The senior class also held a luau during lunch that included beach volleyball, umbrellas, folding chairs, and fun music. The halls were full of superheroes, celebrities, and characters for Tuesday's Character Day, and the seniors decided to dress up as minions from Despicable Me 1 and 2.

AMHS turned into Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry on Wednesday when teachers dressed up as the professors of the magical school and the grades each took a different Hogwarts house.  At an extended lunch, the Freshmen, who were Hufflepuff, faced the Slytherin seniors in the first round of an exciting game of Quidditch where the seniors were victorious. The sophomores, who were Ravenclaw, lost to the Gryffindor juniors in the second round.  The final match pitted Gryffindor versus Slytherin and the seniors won, much to the dismay of the junior class.

On Thursday, the grades took their typical generations for Generation Day and freshman dressed as babies, sophomores as toddlers, the junior class as doctors or professional adults, and the seniors as senior citizens. The seniors had many difficulties navigating the hallways and stairs of the school, and clouds of baby powder could be seen flying from their graying hair during the lively senior citizen race at lunch.

Friday was by far the most intense as students participated in the wall theme of each class's wall.  The freshman sported camo outfits and duck whistles for their Duck Dynasty theme, the sophomores wore scrubs for their hospital, juniors came as mammoths, rocks, dinosaurs, and cavemen for their cavemen theme, and seniors went wild with a tribal jungle idea. Tensions were strong between the two tribal groups of upperclassmen leading up to the first pep rally of the year.  Performances were made by the Dirty Birds, Hott Steppers, and AMHS Cheerleaders in between announcements of fall sports teams and traditional school cheers.

The excitement continued at the Homecoming game against Ridgeland where many of the members of the AMHS community showed up to cheer for our own football team. Though we lost the game, we proved that our school has spirit and knows how to have fun.
