AMHS PIE College Forum Scheduled for October 2nd
|
Thank you to everyone who came to the College Awareness, Keynote Speaker, Author, Elizabeth Wissner-Gross. I think she gave an enlightening and challenging address. Blue Bicycle Books, located at 420 King St. downtown, was kind enough to bring in two of her books, if you missed the opportunity to hear her and would like to read her advice.
What's Next? Wednesday...Oct 2! COLLEGE!!
On Wed. October 2, PIE will bring you another NEW event, a MINI College Forum. The college reps will address the admission experience and provide information helpful for parents and students whether or not they are interested in that particular college. The schools will be displaying for the students from 12:45 till the end of the day, all grades will have an opportunity to visit them in the Gym.
That evening, four of the Admissions Counselors will take the stage in a panel discussion in the Caf at 6 pm. They will be joined by Mr. Steve Turner, founder of College Planning U, Inc. (CPU) a company that specializes in college admissions and financial aid strategies as well as several Informed Magnet parents, who will be answering questions as members of a "Been There, Done That" team.
We will moderate this question and answer format for 30-40 minutes; giving each member an opportunity to speak. After this short forum discussion and refreshment break, the participants will present their topics in 30 minute breakout sessions beginning at 7 pm.
The school Admission Counselors will be available individually (in the caf) and the two Magnet parents of college students will be at the other side of the caf (to provide "real life parent's perspective") until 7 pm. Mr. Steve Turner will give his presentation in a nearby classroom; he will repeat his program for attendees who want to spend time with the colleges and Informed Parents during the first session.
The following schools will be at the Mini Fair (for the students) Asterisk mark the participants in the forum:
*George Washington University: Ms Carol Conchar
*University of Alabama: Mr. Russell Moore
*American College of the Building Arts: Ms. Lucas Adams
*US Naval Academy Information Officer: Chip Kolbe
George Mason University: Ms Gerica Goodman
Tulane: Mr. Tim Neal
Vanderbilt: local Rep Mrs. Robyn Bradley
Syracuse University: local Alumni Rep Mr. Jack Mitchell
Rochester Institute of Technology: local Rep Mrs. M. C. Dubois
If you have any questions for the panel to address, please send them in an email to AMHSPIE@GMAIL.COM.

THE ANNUAL AMHS INTERNATIONAL DINNER:
A much loved evening of food, fellowship and fun:
Cannot happen without you! Ticket sales open with the event 3 weeks away!
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR:
International cuisine food tables-
We currently have the following tables represented:
GERMANY, ITALY, CHINA, MEXICO, INDIA, POLAND, GREECE, USA, SLOVAKIA and SAUDI ARABIA!
We are looking for someone to head the GREEK table- we have volunteers to make Greek food but no one to run it. We also need a volunteer to head and make food for the JEWISH/ISRAEL table.
Please contact Maura Johnson at amhsdinner@aol.com if you are interested in helping country tables, making or serving food. ALL HELP IS WELCOME AND APPRECIATED!
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO OVERSEE THE KITCHEN. Our AMHS/SOA cafeteria kitchen is awesome. We just need an ADULT to guide food preparers to warming ovens if needed as they bring food. The food will already be prepared and we have wonderful student volunteers to help as "runners". The time needed for this would be from 5-8pm and the shift can be divided depending on the # of volunteers we get for this spot.

Please join us in creating this wonderful annual event!
Thank you,
Elaine Coen and Maura Johnson

The Student Perspective... by Jennie Schaff, AMHS Junior |
On Monday, October 16th, the junior class of AMHS took a trip to the North Charleston Coliseum where rows of booths representing colleges from near and far were set up. The students had the chance to gather information and mementos from any college they chose and the opportunity to ask the representatives anything about the schools, from personal experiences to popular majors to class size. On the ride back to Magnet, many of the juniors were trading booklets and brochures and informing each other about some of the colleges that had interested them. The following Wednesday, the faculty and student body gathered in the Rose Marie Meyers Theater to listen to the guest speaker at this fall's convocation, Elizabeth Wissner-Gross. She shared with us her countless experiences of helping young students find a passion and become successful leaders in their workforces. While her encouraging words at the beginning of her speech concerning finding something that interests you rather than limiting yourself were helpful, Wissner-Gross also left many seniors and juniors feeling like they did not have any time to develop a "wow factor" that would be noticed by the colleges they are applying to or looking into. Following the convocation, Wissner-Gross also led a session for the seniors who are, for the most part, currently in the application process.

We're going to England, France, and Scotland for Spring Break! If you would like details about the itinerary and cost, go to www.eftours.com and type in tour #1229635.
Students from any grade are welcome. On this tour, students will gain an understanding of history and culture throughout the ages. Edinburgh's medieval castle recalls Scotland's royal traditions, while the scenic landscapes of Stratford, Chester, and the Lake District give a glimpse of the rural life. In London and Paris, students will discover impressive monuments and museums that reflect two world powers. Our last 2 days will be spent exploring WWII history along the D-Day beaches of Normandy.
If you have questions or would like more information, please let us know. You can contact us at Mary_Altman@charleston.k12.sc.us or call 810-1291.
