Update on 2014 Spring Break Trip to England, Scotland, & France

We're going to England, France, and Scotland for Spring Break!  If you would like details about the itinerary and cost, go to www.eftours.com  and type in tour #1229635.

Students from any grade are welcome. On this tour, students will gain an understanding of history and culture throughout the ages.  Edinburgh's medieval castle recalls Scotland's royal traditions, while the scenic landscapes of Stratford, Chester, and the Lake District give a glimpse of the rural life.  In London and Paris, students will discover impressive monuments and museums that reflect two world powers.  Our last 2 days will be spent exploring WWII history along the D-Day beaches of Normandy.

If you have questions or would like more information, please let us know.  You can contact us at Mary_Altman@charleston.k12.sc.us or call 810-1291.

Thanks,

Joy Altman, Mary Catherine Lankford, and Tyson McCormick

PIE Update

Open House Wed Sept 11;

5:30 pm in the Caf.

Here's what to expect: Most parents leave siblings and Magnet students at home due to time and space constraints; but if you are in a bind, it's not a problem!  It's best to arrive by 5:30 so that you can pick up your student's schedule at the tables. These will be separated by GRADE. If you have not done so, you will have a chance to sign up with PIE and have your email address added to the Raptor Report contacts.

After a short meeting at 6 pm we will adjourn and you will have a chance to follow your student's schedule.  Each of the teachers will be in their classrooms to give you an overview of the year ahead. The bell will ring quickly, so be prepared to move on and take your seat in the next classroom. This is the best opportunity to see it all from the inside, and put some faces to the names of our wonderful educators.

Thanks to the generous support of our wonderful members and supporters, PIE will be hosting a variety of lectures and workshops designed to help parents and students navigate the process of selecting and applying to colleges and universities.  The series is called "What's Next? Wednesdays" and will begin with Author Elizabeth Wissner-Gross, speaking to the Student Body at a morning Convocation on Wed Sept 18.There will be an evening talk with Q&A for parents, beginning at 6 pm in the Caf.Ms. Wissner-Gross is an Educational Strategist who helps students create individualized "game-plans" for gaining admission to the country's most competitive colleges.  She has appeared on The Today Show and been featured in the New York Times, USA Today and many other publications. She is Author of several books, including What High Schools Don't Tell You (and other parents don't want you to know).

Wed Oct 2  AMHS Mini College Fair.

Watch here for more details about who will be participating. Block your calendar for 6 pm to attend a panel discussion with Admission Counselors.

Wed Oct 23 College Admissions 101/ Interviewing Skills 102.

More details to follow!

If YOU would like your alma mater to have a "table" at the fair or you have an idea, along the lines of this college awareness series, please contact Christen Hall at amhspie@gmail.com.  We would welcome your energy and participation!

PIE Membership and Student Directory
If you haven't signed up for PIE (Partners in Education) and the AMHS Student Directory, you still have time. To be included in the directory, please send in your forms and payment to the school or bring to the Open House. This paperwork will also be available at the PIE table on the night of the Open House.  The fee for PIE membership along with a copy of the student directory is $20.00. Extra directories are $5.00 and must be prepaid. The forms can be found on the AMHS website.   Click on the Parents tab, and then on the drop down menu, click on Back to School Forms 2013-2014. Students listed in the 2012-13 directory need to submit a new information sheet to remain in the 2013-2014 directory. If the information is the same as last year, check the first box on the form and you're done.
If you have any questions, please email Robyn Bradley.
The cut-off date for ordering the directory is September 11th.
