Seniors win at  Junior Symposium of Humanities and Sciences

In January, AMHS Seniors competed in the American Academy of Science's Junior Symposium of Humanities and Sciences.Matthew Hunter came in third in his division, Environmental Science.Ana Lanier came in third in her division, Medicine and Health.Kaydren Orcutt came in third in her division, Mathematics.Megan Hunt came in third overall with her paper on The Effect of Sphingosine 1-Phosphate on the Development of Atherosclerosis. She won a trip to the National JSHS conference in Dayton Ohio.Ms. Katy Metzner-Roop was also named one of two JSHS Teachers of the Year.

 

These students will be competing again very soon.Tuesday, March 28 is the Lowcountry Science Fair and Saturday, April 13 is the South Carolina Junior Academy of Science research paper competition. We look forward to their continued success!

Saturday, March 16, the Science Club competed in the South Carolina Science Olympiad at Newberry College.The team placed 5th overall out of 20 teams.Individual winners were:

Timothy Corder - 5th in Forestry, 6th in Rocks & Minerals

Leotie Hakkila & Kilbey McCormick - 3rd in Chemistry

Dawn Jensen & Whitney Su - 5th in Geology, and 5th in Fermi Questions

AMHS Debate Team ends the speech and debate regular competition season on a winning note ; several members advance to national competition

The AMHS Debate Team competed at the Carolina South District Tournament this weekend, held Friday and Saturday at Southside High School in Greenville. This tournament marks the end of the regular season for Speech and Debate. Among the competitors were: 
Lincoln-Douglas Debate: Coleman Richards and Edward Leber

Public Forum Debate: Matthew Martin & Matthew Borland; Harsh Sharma & Jackson Carter; Tyler Rodgers & Zo� Seaman-Grant

Edward Leber came in 5th in Lincoln-Douglas Debate. 

The  team of Tyler Rodgers and Zo� Seaman-Grant went undefeated (7-0) and won the Public Forum Debate. 

Winning first place made Tyler Rodgers and Zo� Seaman-Grant National Tournament Qualifiers. They will be representing the state of South Carolina at the National Speech & Debate Tournament, hosted by the National Forensic League, in Birmingham, Alabama, June 16-21.

The Districts Tournament concluded a very successful year for the team.
Sailing team wins first place in regatta 
sail AMHS sailing team won first place in the Gold Cup Qualifying Regatta this past Saturday. This regatta is the championship of North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Georgia high school sailing teams. Therefore, the AMHS Raptors sailing team is currently ranked as the best team in those four states. The following competitors brought home first place in both divisions: Peter Hogan, Margaux Bacro-Duverger, Ian Duffy, John Seibels, and Katie Hogan. The team has now earned the chance to compete this April in the southeastern district championship in Miami against teams from Florida and the US Virgin Islands, for a spot in the national high school sailing championship.

Multicultural Day coming up March 22 
Frank Kordonis Greek Dancing_Multicultural Day The student activities committee will be hosting another Multi cultural day on Friday March 22. We are looking for parent volunteers who would like to bring in food that represents their cultural heritage. We are offering this as a free event. Tables will be set up, and the students and faculty will be able to sample food from around the world.

Hoops for Heart fundraiser this Friday, March 22

Student basketball teams will compete against each other, and then against the teachers in this fundraiser event. Student Council will be selling tickets for $5 each all week during lunch, and teams can sign up with Margaux or Jake Tucker (3 people on a team, $5 per person).
