Believe it or not, there are only 11 weeks remaining until the Class of 2013 graduates on June 6, 2013, and the days will fly by. The AMHS guidance and administration have already begun work on the next school year with IGP meetings, and students have begun the registration process for next year. Both Mrs. Neloms and Ms. Lamb have been meeting with students and parents to insure that next year's schedule will be challenging and still manageable. We have met also with the 165 students who will be 9th graders next year, and as a group they come from 35 different schools with the highest test scores and GPA's to date. We are excited to have them join the AMHS family as we send our seniors off to the schools across the country. As we prepare to close out an outstanding school year, we approach also the AMHS "testing season" which begins this week with the National French Exam followed by the National Spanish Exam. The rest of the season continues through June 4, 2013:March 19: ACT for Grade 11April 16-18: HSAP Testing for Grade 10May 6-16: AP Tests(May 17: AP Picnic and Battle of the Bands)May 20-23: End of Course Tests for Grades 9, and 11 (English I, Biology I, US History)May 17-22: Senior Exams May 30 & 31: Underclassmen ExamsJune 3 & 4: Underclassmen ExamsJune 6: Graduation 8:30 AMThe testing season is extremely busy and demanding, but it is part of our program, and the students will be well-prepared for each test. If you have any questions about the next weeks, please call us at 746-1300. Thank you for your continued support of our efforts to offer the best possible academic program we can.Judith Peterson

AMHS Science Club has been busy
|
In November, members of the Science Club traveled to Furman to competed in The South Carolina Junior Academy of Science Challenge Bowl. Anna Miller, Kilbey McCormick, and Jesslyn Park won first place. The other science club students enjoyed learning about forensics, chemistry, and geology. In January, it was off to the Myrtle Beach Aquarium for a workshop on sharks and a day exploring the aquarium.
This Saturday, the Science Club will be heading to Newberry College to compete in the Science Olympiad. Find a science club member and wish him or her luck!

AMHS sophomore starts non-profit
|
All Magnet students are amazing, but one tenth grade student is really standing out.Holland McDowell has been a student of ballet since the second grade, and she is a skilled and accomplished dancer.Recently Holland read a study that proved the benefits of ballet in the limbering and toning of muscles for people with Down's syndrome. In Holland's mind, there was only one thing to do; use her talent to help others. Hence the birth of The Purple Tutu.
Holland started a not for profit organization to teach and assemble a ballet company of special needs people. She began by finding a hall that could support this and then began making her tutus. While many students will be relaxing on spring break, Holland will be starting up her ballet company.Classes will begin April 1 - 4 at the Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church. If you know a young person with Down's syndrome, encourage them to try the program.
So far Holland has financed the project herself. She is asking for a $15 registration fee from participating students, with the money she makes from the registration fee being used to fund a college scholarship for a special needs student.
If you wish to be an "Angel" of The Purple Tutu you may make contributions or make inquiries, by contacting Holland directly at thepurpletutuballet@gmail.com.Contributions of snacks and drinks are greatly appreciated as well as monetary contributions for the scholarship fund and any overhead costs.Holland has created something very special that we can be proud to get behind.

Still looking for older photos and videos for the AMHS 2th Anniversary documentary...CAN YOU HELP?
|
My three hard working thesis students and I have not yet uncovered a SINGLE photograph or video from the past, other than the yearbooks. I know that sounds impossible in the day of a camera in every phone, but remember, just a few years ago the wasn't even a phone in every hand. Yeah, yeah, I know they're not supposed to be on during school, but at least for you grads I think the statute of limitations has passed.
Surely there are some teachers, proud parents of grads, or some actual grads that are on the mailing list that have pictures of SOMETHING! No picture is too mundane. Well, maybe, but almost every picture prior to the last 2.5 years would show the old school, the old gym, older hair and clothing styles as we get farther back, maybe actual blackboards in a classroom, archaic computers, the old lab rooms; just about anything.
Please contact Gabby Giles, Christian Senf, or Burdell Fitzgerald during school, or email my at Michael@Finlayson.TV.
Thanks,
Michael Finlayson
