Coastal Community Foundation Announces 2013 Scholarship Opportunities
|
With students beginning to receive college acceptance letters, Coastal Community Foundation is proud to offer financial assistance to Tri-County high school seniors who plan to pursue a two- or four-year college degree. Made possible through the generosity of donors, awards ranging from $500-$5,000 are awarded from the Foundation's 28 scholarship funds (listed below). While applications are open to all seniors from Berkeley, Charleston, and Dorchester counties, some Funds have been established to benefit students from particular geographic areas or high schools, those who are planning on attending certain post-secondary institutions, or who are entering certain fields of study. Additionally, scholarships are awarded based on character & personality, involvement in extra-curricular and community activities, financial need, academic success, aspirations, and ability to overcome obstacles.
Applications are available online through a web-based program, Scholar Select. Prior to creating an online account, students should review the scholarship descriptions to determine their eligibility. In completing one application, students can be considered for each of the Foundation scholarships for which they are eligible. Additionally, the service allows students to make online requests for recommendation letters from faculty, mentors, etc. who will submit the letters electronically.  The auction committee needs your donated auction items to be delivered NOW so they can work on display packages and determine what else we need to solicit to make the 25th Anniversary Celebrate Magnet event the most exciting auction ever! SIC mentor survey update
|
Dear Parents and Friends of AMHS,
We wish to thank all of you who responded to our request for potential Academic Mentors for AMHS students. Some of you have asked what being a mentor requires. With the help of the thesis committee and some parent volunteers, we are trying to establish clear guidelines that will enable potential mentors to determine if they would be able to serve as a successful mentor. In the meantime, however, we have attached a list of all the current thesis projects that are still in need of a mentor. If you think that you or someone you know could possibly assist with one of these projects, we can put you in contact with the students' advisor to discuss what the mentor's responsibilities for the project would be. There are many interesting and exciting thesis topics, but when you look at this list you will see why it has become a daunting task to match students with mentors!
After you have reviewed this list, please consider adding your name to the Senior Thesis Resource Database by providing a small amount of information through this survey link:

Pennies for Patients
|  February (all month)
Monday, February 11 will be the kick-off day for this year's Pennies for Patients campaign to raise funds for children with leukemia and other blood diseases. Collection boxes will be distributed to each Focus classroom at the end of the week in order to be ready for the fundraiser on Monday. Parents can also donate online at: http://scar.sy.llsevent.org/academicmagnethighschool
Instructions for donating online:
- Click the large red DONATE NOW button the top right-hand side of the screen.
- The donor will then be prompted to fill out a form with their information, type and amount of donation, any personal note they want to add, and student name/classroom/teacher to credit the donation to.
- They will receive an email receipt upon donating online. The coordinator will also receive an email when a donation is made.

College Goal South Carolina is an annual event which helps students and families complete the FAFSA ( Free Application for Federal Student Aid). In addition to getting professional help to complete the FAFSA, students are provided information on state scholarships programs as well as information about the state's two and four year higher education institutions. This year, College Goal South Carolina event for the Tri County area will be held at Trident Technical College, 7000 Rivers Avenue, Charleston SC February 23, 2013. The event is FREE.

 The AMHS Booster Club would like to thank all the parents and students for helping the 2012-2013 school year get off to a great start both on and off the field. We held a Booster Club Social at the Creek Club at I'on on February 9 which included a sporting event slide show, oysters, refreshments and a great opportunity for parents and booster members to socialize and make new friends. The booster club has helped so many teams this year thanks to your contributions and membership dues, including the following sports: Football, Boys and Girls Soccer, Boys & Girls Basketball, Boys and Girls Cross Country, Boys Golf, Boys & Girls Lacrosse, Boys & Girls Swimming, Cheerleading, Sailing, Volleyball and Wresting! If you'd like to help in any way, we could use you as little or as much as you have time. The Youth Group at Lighthouse Church in Mount Pleasant is having a spaghetti dinner fundraiser on Monday, February 25. Dine in or take-out between 5:30 and 7:00 pm.
