THE RAPTOR REPORT
Senior Thesis Resource Database...Consider adding your name
Dear Parents and Friends of AMHS,

As we are all aware, the capstone to the AMHS academic experience is the senior thesis. As the school has grown and matured, the challenge to fulfill students' needs for mentors has become more and more difficult (especially considering the wide variety of thesis subjects and the needs for mentors for other academic pursuits such as Science Fair and Robotics Projects). The School Improvement Council (SIC) is working with the Senior Thesis Coordinators to support the process of matching a student with a mentor by creating a Senior Thesis Resource Database of possible mentors and area experts. The Senior Thesis Coordinators could then utilize this database after the students have put forward the topic of their thesis.

Please know that we are not asking each person for a commitment to be a mentor. You can also help by referring students to possible mentors, or by serving as an additional resource. We all know how busy it can be being the parent of a Magnet student. Perhaps you have a colleague whose children are already off to college or grown who would enjoy sharing their expertise and working with a student to provide direction and feedback on the student's project or thesis. If so, please forward this email and ask that person to complete the survey.

We ask that you please consider adding your name to the Senior Thesis Resource Database by  providing a small amount of information through this survey link:
AMHS Mentor Survey

Thank you for your time!

Best regards,

Holly Mitchell & Sue Woods

Spring convocation presented by Dr. Rodney Smolla
Dr. Rodney Smolla On January 24th, all of the AMHS students attended convocation with Dr. Rodney Smolla, the President of Furman University, appearing as the guest speaker. We were treated to an interactive experience as he stood at our level, sharing his message of following our passions so our careers incorporate our interests. In his days as a lawyer and legal educator, he faced a morally and legally difficult case where a company was being sued for publishing a book about murder which fell into the hands of a man who killed several members of a family.Mr. Smolla eventually won this case, even though the odds were against him, and in the process increased his passion for law.

students at convocation Before he left, he imparted us with a few words of wisdom: find something we can get lost in and have fun with, and then find a way to make it a job.

Support the Raptor Triathlon Club - Bike Donations Needed!!!
Road race-cycling The Academic Magnet is proud to announce the inaugural Raptor Triathlon Club led by teachers Murray and Laura Eicher and student leaders Micah Norton and Alex Parler. Our goals for the club are to introduce students to the sport and develop their skills in each of the three continuous and sequential endurance disciplines. Over twenty students are already involved and have begun training for our first event, the Try Charleston Sprint Triathlon scheduled for April 20, 2013 in Mt. Pleasant. We will also focus on preparing the students for the Charleston Sprint Triathlon Series at James Island County Park this summer.

Our main challenge for this club is that most students are attempting this sport for the first time and do not have the necessary equipment needed for the biking portion. If you or someone you know has a
road or triathlon bike which is languishing in the garage...please consider donating it or selling it (at a student friendly price) to someone on our triathlon team. (Unfortunately, mountain or cruiser bikes are not appropriate for this club.) We could also use smaller bike related items to help equip our student athletes (listed below).

Water Bottles
Water Bottle Cages for the bike
Bike Lube
Bike Tubes/Tires
Helmets (required for participation)
Bike Shoes (road bike or triathlon...along with the clip-less pedals)
Bike pumps

We will also take monetary donations to buy equipment for the team. Any equipment donated will not be given to a specific student but will be used by the entire club for years to come. Receipts will be given for tax purposes.
Contact Murray_Eicher@charleston.k12.sc.us or Laura_Eicher@charleston.k12.sc.us if you have items to donate or if you have items you would like to sell!

Thanks so much.
