SPOTLIGHT EXHIBITION:  Famous Julius Melchers' Sculpture on Loan to Belmont

Captain Jack, a 7-foot-tall wooden cigar store Indian carved by Julius Melchers, Gari Melcher's father and first instructor, is now on display.

An illustrated talk, "Julius Melchers: Detroit's Master Sculptor," will be presented on Sunday, Oct. 25 at 2 p.m.

To mark the 40th anniversary of the 1975 public opening of Belmont, we are organizing Belmont Portrayed, a juried exhibition of artistic interpretations of Belmont's buildings and property.

Gari Melchers' painting, The Open Door, is being loaned to the "Jewel City: Art of the Panama-Pacific International Exposition," which will open Oct. 17 at the de Young Museum in San Francisco.

Beyond Stairs and Stanchions
Our 1790s historic house museum is fairly typical in not having an elevator to access its upper levels.  For years, guests who opted out of climbing sixteen stairs to reach the second floor were given a printed tour with pictures and descriptions to peruse.  Not a bad solution, but not great either.[...]

Staff Notes
Welcome to Angela Ziebarth, our new Membership and Office Manager. Angela has a wealth of experience in administrative positions, including the U.S. Naval Academy and Department of Veterans Affairs. She replaces Sarah Palenik, who now works at the Museum for Women in the Arts.

Beate Jensen, Belmont's Cultural Resource Manager, recently earned her Master's degree in Library and Information Science from the University of South Carolina. She's putting her studies to use compiling a database of artifacts found during the restoration of Belmont's historic dependencies, and cataloging historic photographs with the goal of making both available to the public on-line.

Welcome to the first issue of our new mobile-friendly E-News! Hopefully this improved format will make it easier for you to stay in touch with Belmont - at home or on the go.

If you're interested in going on our October 20-21 bus trip to see The Artist's Garden in Winston-Salem, NC, please contact Betsy Labar by September 18.

Hope to see you at Belmont soon!
