While training in Paris sometime around 1881 or 1882, the young Gari Melchers visited the Louvre, and like countless students before him, copied the great masters to improve his technique. One of his efforts has survived. It is a copy of the famous fresco Giovanna
degli Albizzi and the Four Cardinal Virtues by the Italian Renaissance painter Sandro Botticelli (1445-1510).
The painting has just returned from a restoration, conducted by Perry Hurt of North Carolina. Its surface was cleaned of grime, paint cleavage (separation and lifting) was consolidated with animal glue, paint losses were inpainted and finally the whole was lightly varnished. More...

Stafford's Great Blue Herons: From Rookery to River
Sunday, April 7, 2 p.m.
Speaker: Mike Lott, Crow's Nest Manager and DCR Northern Region Steward
Great blue herons, due to their large size, are one of the most commonly seen birds in the Stafford County area. This is particularly true in the spring when many great blue herons can be seen flying back and forth from the heron rookery within and adjacent to the Crow's Nest Natural Area Preserve to the Rappahannock River.
Great blue herons often congregate in large numbers along the Rappahannock River adjacent to Belmont where they take advantage of the spring fish migration (e.g. alewife and American shad). This represents an important food source for the young herons at the Crow's Nest Rookery.
This presentation will touch on the life history of the great blue heron, the rookery at Crow's Nest and importance of the spring fish migration along the Rappahannock River. Free and open to the public.
