At Taylored Expressions, we love learning new and unexpected ways to use our products. Today we are thrilled to share a step-by-step tutorial from Blog Team designer Lisa Henke, who shares how to create projects using a very fun technique that combines the freshness of watercolor with the ease of die-cutting!

A Note from Lisa:
I love summer and all the celebrations to go with it. I live for the warmth and sunshine! The delicious foods, pool and lake time, and all the red, white & blue decor everywhere really make summer official. I used the gorgeous Americana Script die to create this festive, patriotic card. I'm also excited to share a tutorial on how to create this project using the Camouflage Watercolor Die Cut Technique.

Here are the supplies Lisa used:
Distress Inks (Blue Print, Candied Apple), acrylic block, watercolor paper, spritzer, cup of water, two sizes of paint brushes, Americana Script and Seeing Stars dies

Now let's get started!

Step 1.
Trim watercolor paper down to 3.75 x 5 inches. Ink up acrylic block with two ink choices, leaving a small gap between colors. This will give you room to blend the colors once you apply them to your paper.

Step 2. Spritz inked block with water

Step 3. Carefully turn your inked block over and lay on to water color paper. Lift acrylic block up, being careful to pull straight up. The colors will move a bit as you lift the block.

Step 4. Add more water to your water color panel with the larger paint brush, pushing the color around to a desired look. I like to soften the edges a bit with the paint brush.

Step 5. Use a clean paper towel to pull up any large pools of colored water around the edges. Set watercolor panel aside to dry.

Step 6. Using the Americana Script die and Seeing Stars dies, cut out four layers of each from cardstock. Adhere each layer together and set aside.

Step 7. Once the water color panel is dry, add some splattering with the same color Distress Inks you used on the panel. (Smoosh your ink onto an acrylic block, add water, and pick up the color with the small paint brush. I like to tap the loaded paint brush against the back of my hand to get a good splatter effect.)

Step 8. Once the panel is dry, place the script die and star die over the panel where you would like the die-cuts to be on your final project and run through die-cutting machine.

Step 9. Carefully pop out the watercolor pieces and adhere them to the stack of each of the die pieces you cut earlier from solid cardstock.

Step 10.
Finish the details of your card and glue the stacked die cut pieces back into their negative spaces.

Finishing Touches: I added the finished watercolor panel to a Toffee cardstock piece that I ran through my die-cut machine with the Lots of Stars Embossing Folder. I also tucked in some white sequins from the Rainbow Brights bottle and the cute little silver stars from the Build a Scene Halloween bottle. A sweet little burlap twine bow finished it off.
