 Making a Peaceful Difference

bff Did you know that middle school girls all over the world are using what they are learning through the Junior Journey aMAZE! and the Middle School Series: BFF to make a difference around their homes, schools and communities? Girls have:

  • Developed "How to Survive Middle School" booklets with relationship and bully-prevention tips for incoming girls
  • Created a friendship mural for their school community
  • Declared a "Blue Ribbon" week at their middle school where they will share what they have learned through BFF with other students throughout the week
  • Made posters to hang at school to educate and inspire others on friendship and bully-prevention
  • Talked to school administrators about having cameras installed in more places so that relationally aggressive behavior doesn't go unnoticed!

What has your troop or group been doing to make a difference in your world? Send photos and brief description of your project to communications@girlscouts-gateway.org

 DISCOVER:

Jump into Journeys-2013-Save the Date!

We're bringing Journeys to life in our annual Jump into Journeys event! Save the date for Saturday, October 12 and join us at the North Fork Leadership Center in Middleburg!

Troop Bank Account Information

Does your troop have a bank account?

If so, remember a new
Troop Bank Information form must be submitted to the council annually. Current banking information is kept on file thru June 30 of each year.
Even if there has been no change to your troop's banking information, a new form needs to be submitted after July 1 of each year.

The purpose of this form is to provide the Council's finance department with up-to-date troop bank account information. All financial assistance, cookie & nuts refunds and other troop funds are credited directly to a troop's bank account via an ACH (automated clearing house) direct deposit. Without current banking information, it is not possible to transmit these funds

Additionally, troop bank accounts are opened utilizing the Council's tax id, the Council must maintain a list of these accounts for its annual audit.

Troop Bank Information form captures all necessary information and can be submitted automatically once completed.

SHARE

Did you know that your contribution to SHARE, together with those of other families and volunteers, helps to provide program materials, uniform components, camp opportunities, and assistance with troop and membership dues, for Girl Scouts whose families cannot afford them?

It's hard to believe that from October 2012-March 2013, there were 1,186 requests, for a total of $14,232, just for girl membership dues assistance. With the increase in dues this year, we anticipate even more financial assistance requests. YOUR gift is needed now more than ever.

Please give to SHARE today

Volunteer Of Excellence

New Adult Recognition

Girl Scouts of the USA has aligned Adult Recognitions with the Girl Scout Leadership Experience. With this change comes an exciting new award opportunity for volunteers who help girls and adults. The new award is titled: Volunteer of Excellence.

This award addition means the retiring of two awards: "Outstanding Leader" and "Outstanding Volunteer." Please refer to page 107-108 of Volunteer Essentials for more information on the Volunteer of Excellence award.

Retiring Service Unit Managers

Building Leaders, One Girl at a Time

Without a paycheck or any fanfare, you put in long hours, stay patient as girls lead their own activities, and bring fun and spirit to everything girls do.

You inspire others to accomplish our mission by directing teams as you plan, prioritize, organize, ensure momentum, and make tough decisions. You motivate and energize teams, and resolve differing opinions and personalities in order to create maximum results.

You  provide leadership and management, work with all members of your service teams in recruitment and retention of girl and adult membership, and ensure they feel supported as we the deliver the Girl Scout Leadership Experience. It is clear we will benefit from the guidance and strength your tenure has given us for many years to come.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to you and your family for all the time, energy, and passion you've selflessly devoted to our mission of building girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place.

Join us in thanking these retiring Service Unit Managers for being a force for good in the lives of girls!

The celebration of five accomplished community women was a huge success! On May 10, 2013, over 370 guests came to hear about the impact Girl Scouting had on their personal lives and careers. Honoree, Susan Spain, credited her success with having strong family values and said, "What we do when we are young molds us into adults."  Angela Terrell described her Girl Scout experiences as giving her a sense of belonging, saying, "My experiences taught me about the importance of sharing, caring, goal setting, integrity and giving back to the community." Susan Crowley realized early that, "Girl Scouts taught me the value of girlfriends. Working together on projects and activities we learned to depend on other females not only in work but also at play."  Debby Knopf learned early on the importance of giving back. "I learned to give back as a way of life, following in my parent's footsteps", she said. Jennifer Costello focused on the relationship between a mother and daughter and the importance of community service saying, "It is up to us to make sure girls have what they need to reach their dreams."

Troop 200 presented the service project that earned them the Girl Scouts Bronze Award, and local Girl Scouts presented the flag ceremony.  To see photos, visit Home Magazine on Facebook.

The 24th Annual Women of Distinction Luncheon was a great success! Raising nearly $100,000 for girls in our community, the 2013 Women of Distinction featured honorees whose accomplishments in career and community service exemplify the values of Girl Scouts. Jill Dame, Estelle McKissick, Shannon Miller, Rita Perry, Cindy Sanborn and Isabelle Spence were honored at the luncheon held on April 11 at the Hyatt Regency Jacksonville Riverfront.

A huge thanks to the honorees, sponsors, co-chairs Susan Hamilton and Cheryl Riddick, along with committee members Brenda Ezell, Maria Coppola, Marsha Oliver, and Wanda Willis for making this event such a success.

Five StarAre You a Five Star Troop?
