Building Proctor Boathouse
History of Volunteering at CRI

In our third year, 1977, CRI negotiated with the MDC (now the DCR) for use of the Daly Skating Rink during the summers.  After moving in we learned that the MDC had plans to redo the roof that summer and we wouldn't be able to use it after all.  One of our founding directors, Sherry Proctor, was a designer and architect.  Sherry obtained a permit to build a temporary boathouse next to the rink good for 6 weeks.  He designed a boathouse that could be constructed by volunteers from the club and could be taken down and reused after the 6 weeks were up.

The boathouse was built in a weekend.  When the building was finished, there was less than a 30 gallon trash can of scraps.  The boathouse became the Proctor boathouse and it remained in place long after the 6-week permit expired.

In the summer of 2006, even though CRI would leave the rink at the end of the year, Proctor's roof and walls were rotting out.  It wouldn't last a last summer.  Volunteers from the club spent a day replacing the rotten plywood sheets.  As CRI left the rink in the following summer, we were asked by the DCR to leave the volunteer-built boathouse in place.  It served for several more years as a boathouse for Newton Country Day and Wellesley.  Recently it has been rebuilt by NCD on the same foot print.

As we left Proctor and the rink for the Harry Parker Boathouse, we took two pieces of our history at the rink - the shield that was on the front façade of Proctor and the sign that went up on the rink every summer.  They each found a new location in the new boathouse and remind us of our past in the rink and the boathouse that volunteers built.

Corporate Rowing
News & Updates

Last Tuesday, CRI hosted a group from AthenaHealth for their company's second team-building row of the summer. AthenaHealth is a provider of cloud-based healthcare software and mobile applications. A big thank you to coaches Ariel Handler and Haley Martin for guiding the group through fantastic sessions on the ergs and the CRI Pond Course. Another big thanks to both of our coxswains, Jennifer Bindman and Sarah Cottrill, and to our volunteers from RowBoston and the greater CRI community!

CRI Blood Drive
Friday, September 9

Blood drive at CRI on Friday September 9 - Please pledge to participate!

You never know when a friend, family member, co-worker or fellow rower might need blood.  Unfortunately one of our long time rowing friends, Mohammed Jafri, recently succumbed to Multiple Myeloma. This disease is a cancer of the bone marrow and requires a lot of blood for treatment.  The CRI community will be honoring Mohammed by sponsoring a blood drive on Friday September 9th on the second floor of CRI.  Please pledge to show your support.

"When I started treatment, it was truly eye opening to see how much people with blood cancers rely on transfusions. There is an enormous need for blood for these diseases and many others. For my illness (technically Multiple Myeloma, which is similar to Leukemia - not sure about the exact differences), I've had to go through countless transfusions just to keep my hemoglobin counts barely normal."  - Mohammed Jafri May 26, 2016

Please let us know if will participate by filling out a pledge sheet will at the CRI front desk, or you can indicate your interest by signing up electronically at HERE. Pledging shows intent and we realize that travel or illness may change your ability to donate.  Knowing how many people pledge helps us organize equipment and staff for the donation.  We will contact you by e-mail to sign-up for a specific time.  This way you can best plan your day around your donation time.
