CRI Newton - Stoller Boat House

Come over to CRI Newton, sessions for 9 years old and upwards!

For the first time, CRI is offering classes for kids aged 9 and up, in sculling boats that are the right size for very young people! The new location on the Upper Charles offers a protected setting for rowers of all ages, and we have established programs for people from age 9 to 90. At the Harry Parker Boathouse, kids aged 12 and up are welcome, but we have reserved this new stretch of the Charles River above the Watertown Dam for smaller sculling classes focused on people of all ages.

CRI is also offering a Parent / Child option for the first time. On Saturday mornings throughout the summer, we invite adults and their child to come and scull together at the new Stoller Boathouse. The classes are appropriate for rowers of all skill levels, and you will have an opportunity to row a double together on the bucolic Upper Charles with an experienced coach providing instruction and guidance.

This amazing new location, the brand new fleet of boats and CRI's 30 years' experience of providing safe, fun and healthy activities on the Charles River come together to offer CRIers and the local community the chance to take part in an exciting and healthy sport for the first time. CRI is delighted to partner with Lasell College to open this quiet waterway to the whole Community, offering 'Rowing for All' to a much wider audience!

Sign up is available now - go to www.communityrowing.org website and navigate to the CRI Stoller tab on the sign-up page.
CRI Welcomes MPI
Wednesday, July 20th

CRI Welcomes MPI Tomorrow Evening

The CRI community has the distinct pleasure of hosting the Meeting Professionals International, New England Chapter for their summer outing tomorrow evening - Wednesday, July 20th. This is the group that facilitates the introduction of rowing through team building rows at CRI for 800 people annually, which provides strong support our mission of "Rowing for All."

Tomorrow from 3:00 to 5:00 we will have 50 new rowers or seven 8+s of people from this group participating in a team building row. Followed at 5:30PM, we will then be hosting them and 70 additional meeting planners for cocktails and hors d'oeuvres in the West area in and around the tent with entertainment from a band and a large screen display. During this time, if you wish to row, we encourage you to work with our team assisting with the event to help you with boat access to the docks.

As we share our mission with these special people who are brand new to our community can you offer your parking space by parking remotely Wednesday from 3:00PM - 8:30PM that evening?  The parking map below is to help you find alternate spaces a 3 minute walk from the boathouse on North Beacon Street.

We appreciate your support as we welcome this group to our community and allow them to experience CRI at its greatest.

Upper Charles Waterway
Help the Local Community & the CRWA

As part of our move on to the Upper Charles waterway, we want to work with the local community and help and support where we can. The 5000m of new waterway is going to be hugely beneficial to us and also the many, many people that will experience this amazing stretch of water.

With that in mind, we are working with the Charles River Watershed Association (CRWA) to help promote their 10th season for water chestnut removal on the Upper Charles River. We are asking of there are any people that would like to offer their help.
  • The two current methods for water chestnut removal are hand-pulling and mechanical harvesting.
  • Water chestnuts are an invasive species native to Eurasia that was brought to the US in the 19th century. Water chestnuts are problematic because they grow in thick mats, blocking sunlight from reaching the water and absorbing dissolved oxygen. Water chestnuts out compete native vegetation and use up the oxygen for other aquatic life, such as fish. Moreover, when water chestnut growth becomes too thick, the river becomes unnavigable.
  • Water chestnuts generally starting growing in late June and drop their seeds into the river in August. The hand-pulling season, therefore, occurs between early June to mid-August.
  • For CRWA's Canoeing for Clean Water program, CRWA staff lead groups of 30 volunteers in kayaks onto the river to hand-pull water chestnuts. The events last 2-3 hours and generally occur in the morning to avoid extreme heat and severe weather events. CRWA and Boating in Boston provide all necessary equipment and training.
  • On average, CRWA leads 25 events and 500+ volunteers per season. In 2015, 40 tons or 80,000 pounds of water chestnuts were removed from the Charles.
  • All questions can be sent to Caitlin Chiquelin, by email at waterchestnut@crwa.org or by phone at (781) 788-0007 ext. 235
  • To sign up for a public event, volunteers must register by filling out this form.
  • The public events leave from the Boating in Boston location at Newton Historic Boathouse. The address is 2401 Commonwealth Avenue, Auburndale, MA. Directions can be found here. It's important to note that volunteers park off site, but there are ample signs directing people to the parking lot, which is just across the river and about a 2 minute walk.
  • The public events for the rest of the season are:
Sunday, July 24, 9:30 AM - 12:30 PM
Saturday, August 6, 9:30 AM - 12:30 PM

For more information, visit the website here.
