Do you have a 9 year old that wants to row, now they can!
Stoller - CRI Newton

For the first time, CRI is offering classes for kids aged 9 and up, in sculling boats that are the right size for very young people! The new location on the Upper Charles offers a protected setting for rowers of all ages, and we have established programs for people from age 9 to 90. At the Harry Parker Boathouse, kids aged 12 and up are welcome, but we have reserved this new stretch of the Charles River above the Watertown Damn for smaller sculling classes focused on young people.

CRI is also offering a Parent Child option for the first time. On Saturday mornings throughout the summer, we invite you and your son or daughter to come and scull together at the new Stoller Boathouse. The classes are appropriate for rowers of all skill levels, and you will have an opportunity to row singles or doubles on the bucolic Upper Charles with an experienced coach providing instruction and guidance.

This amazing new location, the brand new fleet of boats and CRI's 30 years' experience of providing safe, fun and healthy activities on the Charles River come together to offer CRIers and the local community the chance to take part in an exciting and healthy sport for the first time. CRI is delighted to partner with Lasell College to open this quiet waterway to the wider CRI Community, offering 'Rowing for All' to a much wider audience!

Sign up is available now - go to www.communityrowing.org website and navigate to the CRI Stoller tab on the sign-up page.

Deadline for reserving a boat for this event is in 8 days (10 days before the event).  We HAVE a trailer so doubles, quads and singles are welcome.
The more the merrier!

CRI member Bartlett Leiber has invited CRI entrants to a BBQ at her home by the course afterwards. Relax and enjoy the company of your CRI teammates after the row.

"Row the Prouty" is an annual fund-raiser for cancer.

This is not a race.  It's an opportunity to row on the beautiful Connecticut River with rowers from other clubs. Singles, doubles, quads and 8's can participate.

Launch from the Dartmouth College rowing docks and row between 7am-1pm.  Choose your own distance (5, 10, 15 or 20 miles in "out and back" format) and go at your own pace.

Team captain is Rony Sebok.  E-mail her at [email protected] so we can coordinate and answer your questions.

If you know of a group that would like to field a team to row in Session 3 (August 9th to September 17th), please put them in touch with Patrick Larcom and he will get them on the water - [email protected]

On the morning of Tuesday the 21st, CRI welcomed the Crescent Club, a group of top salesmen and women from Ditch Witch, to the boathouse for a team-building row.  The Crescent Club rewarded its members with a week-long trip to Boston for their hard work, and several of them chose to come to CRI and learn to row as one of their activities.  Blessed with great weather, the group was eager to get stared.  Coaches Bryan Pape and Rachel Schlosser guided the group through an exciting erg session and dock talk, and the group was on the water downstream of CRI in no time.  What a great way to spend a morning out on the Charles.  A big thank you to Bryan and Rachel for coaching, and to Hannah Frankel for coxing!

Later that day, CRI hosted a group of employees from TripAdvisor, the world's largest travel planning and booking website.  Based in Needham, MA, the group didn't have to travel far for their team-building row.  Coaches Bryan Pape and George Bryant did a fantastic job of teaching the basics of the stroke on the erg in the CRI weight room, and followed that up with a great session on the water. Thank you to Bryan and George for coaching, and to Cha Cha and Olanne for coxing barges out on the CRI Pond Course.

Wednesday the 22nd was also a great day at CRI with the hosting of Sanofi, a healthcare and pharmaceutical company with offices all over the globe.  A group from their Cambridge office joined us at the boathouse for a team-building row.  Coached by Coree Naslund and Haley Martin through a tremendous erg session in the CRI weight room, the group then went down to the docks for a quick dock talk before shoving off in two barges. What a fantastic way to see Boston and enjoy the sunset out on the Charles.  A big thank you to Coree and Haley for coaching, Alexa Marcasciano and Hannah Frankel for coxing, and to Calvin Terpstra, Bob Ezzell, and Allison Sokoloff for lending their time and talents as volunteers for the event!

Upper Charles Waterway
Help the Local Community & the CRWA

As part of our move on to the Upper Charles waterway, we want to work with the local community and help and support where we can. The 5000m of new waterway is going to be hugely beneficial to us and also the many, many people that will experience this amazing stretch of water.

With that in mind, we are working with the Charles River Watershed Association (CRWA) to help promote their 10th season for water chestnut removal on the Upper Charles River. We are asking of there are any people that would like to offer their help.
  • The two current methods for water chestnut removal are hand-pulling and mechanical harvesting.
  • Water chestnuts are an invasive species native to Eurasia that was brought to the US in the 19th century. Water chestnuts are problematic because they grow in thick mats, blocking sunlight from reaching the water and absorbing dissolved oxygen. Water chestnuts out compete native vegetation and use up the oxygen for other aquatic life, such as fish. Moreover, when water chestnut growth becomes too thick, the river becomes unnavigable.
  • Water chestnuts generally starting growing in late June and drop their seeds into the river in August. The hand-pulling season, therefore, occurs between early June to mid-August.
  • For CRWA's Canoeing for Clean Water program, CRWA staff lead groups of 30 volunteers in kayaks onto the river to hand-pull water chestnuts. The events last 2-3 hours and generally occur in the morning to avoid extreme heat and severe weather events. CRWA and Boating in Boston provide all necessary equipment and training.
  • On average, CRWA leads 25 events and 500+ volunteers per season. In 2015, 40 tons or 80,000 pounds of water chestnuts were removed from the Charles.
  • All questions can be sent to Caitlin Chiquelin, by email at [email protected] or by phone at (781) 788-0007 ext. 235
  • To sign up for a public event, volunteers must register by filling out this form.
  • The public events leave from the Boating in Boston location at Newton Historic Boathouse. The address is 2401 Commonwealth Avenue, Auburndale, MA. Directions can be found here. It's important to note that volunteers park off site, but there are ample signs directing people to the parking lot, which is just across the river and about a 2 minute walk.
  • The public events for the rest of the season are:
Saturday, July 9, 9:30 AM - 12:30 PM
Tuesday, July 12, 5:00 PM - 7:30 PM
Sunday, July 24, 9:30 AM - 12:30 PM
Saturday, August 6, 9:30 AM - 12:30 PM
