Rowing for All Has a Second Location
Stoller - CRI Newton
|
For the first time, CRI is offering classes for kids aged 9 and up, in sculling boats that are the right size for very young people! The new location on the Upper Charles offers a protected setting for rowers of all ages, and we have established programs for people from age 9 to 90. At the Harry Parker Boathouse, kids aged 12 and up are welcome, but we have reserved this new stretch of the Charles River above the Watertown Damn for smaller sculling classes focused on young people. CRI is also offering a Parent Child option for the first time. On Saturday mornings throughout the summer, we invite you and your son or daughter to come and scull together at the new Stoller Boathouse. The classes are appropriate for rowers of all skill levels, and you will have an opportunity to row singles or doubles on the bucolic Upper Charles with an experienced coach providing instruction and guidance. This amazing new location, the brand new fleet of boats and CRI's 30 years' experience of providing safe, fun and healthy activities on the Charles River come together to offer CRIers and the local community the chance to take part in an exciting and healthy sport for the first time. CRI is delighted to partner with Lasell College to open this quiet waterway to the wider CRI Community, offering 'Rowing for All' to a much wider audience!

Corporate Team Building
News & Updates
|
Last week was another successful one for the corporate rowing programs at CRI. We were able to welcome over 400 clients to rowing at CRI through the hosting of two team building rows, one family-oriented row for a nearby private school, and another week of the Charles River Rowing League (CRRL). This week marks the last week of Session 1 of the CRRL. At the end of the week, all fourteen boats will race on the CRI Pond race course and enjoy a post-race barbecue with family and friends. More information on race results in next week's E-News Update. If you're interested in volunteering for the league or you know of a company that would like to field a team and row in Session 2 (June 21st to July 28th), please put them in touch with Patrick Larcom and he will get them on the water - patrick.larcom@communityrowing.org On Wednesday, we hosted a group of representatives from Roche, a research-based Healthcare company headquartered in Basel, Switzerland. They used the team building row as an opportunity to build camaraderie and connection between their employees from all around the world - and to take a fun break from a week of meetings in Boston. Thanks to Head Coach Ariel Handler and coaches Mary Foster and Lane Lauriat for putting on a professional event. Another huge thank you to Emily Dwyer, Jessica Voss, Richard Honan, Matthew McLaughlin, and Andrea Thies for volunteering their time and talents for the morning.
Friday the 10th was another eventful day at the CRI boathouse with the hosting of Cooley LLP for a team building row. Greeted by fantastic weather, the two boats full of Cooley partners, summer associates, and volunteers took to the water after an exciting erg session and dock-talk from Coaches Lane Lauriat and George Bryant. A big thank you to Lane and George for helping out! Another big thank you to Robert Bacon, Richard Amster, Vickery Kehlenbeck, Matthew McLaughlin, Barbara Goldstein, Lizzie St. Brice, Olanne Healy, and Jessica Voss for volunteering for the event. On Saturday the 11th, CRI hosted students, teachers, and parents from the Clark School in Rowley, MA for a family row at the CRI boathouse. After learning the basics of the the stroke on the erg upstairs in erg studio, coaches Nigel Gallaher and Patrick Larcom brought the group down to Dock 3 to launch an 8+ and a barge. Despite bad weather, the students and their teachers in the barge were able to race against their parents in the 8. A big thank you to Nigel and Patrick for coaching! An additional thank you to Carol Krauss and Vickery Kehlenbeck for volunteering as well.

Upper Charles Waterway
Help the Local Community & the CRWA
|
As part of our move on to the Upper Charles waterway, we want to work with the local community and help and support where we can. The 5000m of new waterway is going to be hugely beneficial to us and also the many, many people that will experience this amazing stretch of water.
With that in mind, we are working with the Charles River Watershed Association (CRWA) to help promote their 10th season for water chestnut removal on the Upper Charles River. We are asking if there are any people that would like to offer their help. -
The two current methods for water chestnut removal are hand-pulling and mechanical harvesting.
-
Water chestnuts are an invasive species native to Eurasia that was brought to the US in the 19th century. Water chestnuts are problematic because they grow in thick mats, blocking sunlight from reaching the water and absorbing dissolved oxygen. Water chestnuts out compete native vegetation and use up the oxygen for other aquatic life, such as fish. Moreover, when water chestnut growth becomes too thick, the river becomes unnavigable.
-
Water chestnuts generally starting growing in late June and drop their seeds into the river in August. The hand-pulling season, therefore, occurs between early June to mid-August.
-
For CRWA's Canoeing for Clean Water program, CRWA staff lead groups of 30 volunteers in kayaks onto the river to hand-pull water chestnuts. The events last 2-3 hours and generally occur in the morning to avoid extreme heat and severe weather events. CRWA and Boating in Boston provide all necessary equipment and training.
-
On average, CRWA leads 25 events and 500+ volunteers per season. In 2015, 40 tons or 80,000 pounds of water chestnuts were removed from the Charles.
-
Volunteers meet at the Newton Historic Boathouse at 2401 Commonwealth Avenue in Newton. Parking is available across the street at the end of Norumbega Road.
