Stoller - CRI Newton
Learn to Row Day & Registration Opens

CRI this week hosted the National Learn to Row Day (NLTRD) at our new location at CRI Newton, The Stoller Boat House. As the building is still in the middle of having a lot of re-modeling done to the internal space, we wanted to open the building in a small way so people could see what we had been doing over the last few months. The hope being that CRI people and members of the local community could begin to appreciate and understand how the facility is available to them and how they may be able to use it in the future. We distributed 4000 flyers to the surrounding towns emanating out from the Auburndale hub and also promoted the site locally.

On the day, we opened the boat house from 10.00 am to 1.00pm and with the enormous help from a dozen or so people from the CRI community. Ann and Joan from 'The Little Sculling Boat Company' brought along two of their boats too and these were ideal for some very young people that came along. Overall we were able to attract over 30 people to view the site and go out on the water, most for the very first time.

The feedback has been great and people are very keen to come back and try the waterways for themselves with the new programs available on the sign up page of the website We have already had enquiries for the summer and the three options are as follows:

Middle School Summer Skills for those that want to learn the very basics of rowing and have fun generally.

Adult Sculling 1 teaches the basics of the sculling stroke and gets the participants in a position where they are able to scull effectively and safely in singles.

Adult Sculling 4 is for those that have already learnt to scull and want and need more detailed instruction. This will take existing scullers to a much higher competency level.

"The Prouty" Row
Save the Date!

Join other CRI rowers for "Row the Prouty" an annual fund-raiser for cancer on July 9th in Hanover, NH.

This is not a race.  It's an opportunity to row on the beautiful Connecticut River with rowers from other clubs. Singles, doubles, quads and 8's can participate.

Launch from the Dartmouth College rowing docks.  Choose your own distance (5, 10, 15 or 20 miles in "out and back" format) and go at your own pace.

CRI has offered to make a trailer available this year for us to bring up larger club boats as well as singles.

Please let us know - the sooner the better - if you're interested so that we can plan accordingly.

Team captain is Rony Sebok.  E-mail her at rsebok@gmail.com.

Anyone interested in a boat from CRI or trailer space for a personal boat must fill out the CRI Regatta Boat Request Form no later than 10 days prior to the event.

Upper Charles Waterway
Help the Local Community & the CRWA

As part of our move on to the Upper Charles waterway, we want to work with the local community and help and support where we can. The 5000m of new waterway is going to be hugely beneficial to us and also the many, many people that will experience this amazing stretch of water.
With that in mind, we are working with the Charles River Watershed Association (CRWA) to help promote their 10th season for water chestnut removal on the Upper Charles River. We are asking if there are any people that would like to offer their help.
  • The two current methods for water chestnut removal are hand-pulling and mechanical harvesting.
  • Water chestnuts are an invasive species native to Eurasia that was brought to the US in the 19th century. Water chestnuts are problematic because they grow in thick mats, blocking sunlight from reaching the water and absorbing dissolved oxygen. Water chestnuts out compete native vegetation and use up the oxygen for other aquatic life, such as fish. Moreover, when water chestnut growth becomes too thick, the river becomes unnavigable.
  • Water chestnuts generally starting growing in late June and drop their seeds into the river in August. The hand-pulling season, therefore, occurs between early June to mid-August.
  • For CRWA's Canoeing for Clean Water program, CRWA staff lead groups of 30 volunteers in kayaks onto the river to hand-pull water chestnuts. The events last 2-3 hours and generally occur in the morning to avoid extreme heat and severe weather events. CRWA and Boating in Boston provide all necessary equipment and training.
  • On average, CRWA leads 25 events and 500+ volunteers per season. In 2015, 40 tons or 80,000 pounds of water chestnuts were removed from the Charles.
  • Volunteers meet at the Newton Historic Boathouse at 2401 Commonwealth Avenue in Newton. Parking is available across the street at the end of Norumbega Road.
  • Sign up for a public event through CRWA's website www.crwa.org

Below are the list of dates for public events:
