CRI Volunteer Appreciation
Article Subheading

This past Saturday CRI hosted its first Volunteer Appreciation Event to thank MANY volunteers who helped throughout 2015. In order to carry out CRI's Mission of Rowing for All volunteers are needed. In fact, over 500+ volunteers were needed during 2015. Volunteers signed up to help in the all programs; Adaptive, Veterans, Row Boston, Boat/Repair Bay, Corporate and Youth Teams.

To quote Bruce Smith, "Volunteering at the Harry Parker Boathouse is a special ticket to the kind of satisfaction and happiness that is usually reserved for the very young or the very lucky. Getting together to help others get on the water - whether it is with a para rowing program or a team building event or by working at the boathouse on a special project - has a profound positive impact on other people and it brings new happiness into the world that simply wouldn't exist otherwise. Knowing that you have shared health and community and human connection with others transforms any day of the week into a Red Letter Day."

Five individuals received the Volunteer Appreciate Award for 2015 for going above and beyond what it means to volunteer. Those in attendance also won gift certificates to Starbucks and Chipotle. Help us thank all the volunteers who helped in 2015. It takes a community, a CRI community to make all CRI programs a success!

2015 Volunteer Appreciate Award Winners:

Boat Bay/ Repair Bay:
Presented by:   Dave Snowdon  dave@communityrowing.org
Winner: Mirana Varfi

It has been 3 plus years of volunteer work for Mirana in the shop and she continues to be a great help to the shop and building operations. While volunteering Mirana helps organizes the facility and maintains the rowing equipment. She adapts quickly to new jobs and is able to complete a wide range of tasks. Mirana's eagerness to learn new trades allows her to work intelligently with composite repairs on shells. Work in the shop can become rather hectic at times with the influx of work and Mirana helps to bring some stability with her calm demeanor and solid work ethic. She is always willing to help whether it is a rebuild of a launch or sweeping the floors. Mirana's time in the shop will never go unnoticed and is a testament to the strength of CRI's volunteer membership.

Corporate Team Building:
Presented by:   Jeff Nelson  jeff.nelsoncri@gmail.com
Winner: Phil Fontana

Phil Fontana volunteered for more corporate events than I can count. He always showed up early and went home late. He did every job we had and did it with a smile. He even did some jobs we didn't have. When Phil showed up he just went to work, I rarely ever needed to tell him what needed to be done. An example of this is when Phil came to volunteer for an event and during his downtime while waiting for crews to return, he started working on cleaning the old Pocock 8+ we had in racks.  It had been stained brown from many years of use on the Charles.  It took him about 2 hours but he had it shined up so you could see the white hull again. It looked almost brand new. No one asked him to do it, he just decided the boat needed to be cleaned.

Para Rowing:
Presented by:   Jenny Sichel  jenny@communityrowing.org
Winner:  Andrea Covelli

Thank you to all of the Para Volunteers that have been with the program this past year. Without the volunteers, about 70% of our athletes would never get the chance to row here at CRI. To put it in perspective, out of our 30 ongoing athletes, 21 of them would not know the feeling that we experience with on the water rowing.

This year we would like to honor one that has gone above and beyond for CRI Para. Every time Andrea Covelli walks into volunteer with para, she has a smile on her face and an attitude ready to take on anything we throw at her.  From coxing, to bowing a 4x, to just helping an athlete take continuous strokes on an erg, Andrea has contributed so much of her time and energy to CRI Para Rowing.  During the course of the past year, Andrea has logged approximately 172 hours volunteering with us and there is no way to thank her enough!  So with gratitude in the coaches' minds and joy in the athletes' hearts, congratulations Andrea and all of the volunteers on a year well rowed.

Row Boston:
Presented by:  Ariel Handler  ahandlercri@gmail.com
Winner:  Deigo Rao

Diego Rao is the recipient of the Volunteer Award for Row Boston. Diego has shown exemplary work ethic this year and incredible commitment to Community Rowing. As a volunteer rower and coxswain, he was always eager to help in any way possible. For these and many other reasons, Diego is our Row Boston
Volunteer of the Year.

Military Rowing:
Presented by:   Marilyn Koblan   marilyn@communityrowing.org
Winner:  Fred Jones

Fred Jones service to others within the military program is admirable His commitment to his fellow service members is an example of the connection our military rowers treasure at CRI.

If you have questions about any of these programs or wish to get a head start and sign up to help now, please email any of the Coaches directly.  We will ensure you get on the list to volunteer for 2016 programs and events.

We look forward to seeing you at next year's Volunteer Appreciation Event 2016.
