Thank You Coach Kate Smith |
| Coach Kate sending off the club 8+ for the HOCR 2014
|
This week Coach Kate announced that this was her last practice as Assistant Coach. We are very sad to see her go, but relish the time she coached each of us to become a better rower and person. She is amazing in her own special way. Kate, we wish you good health and look forward to your guest coach appearances.

Nike Event a Success
Thanks to all of our wonderful volunteers, coxswains and coaches who helped us pull off an incredibly successful Nike event last Tuesday morning. The good cheer and expertise this group embodies makes CRI unique. You'll note the CRI team was well-fed throughout and the participants from Nike had a great experience. Be sure to join us at one of our many events this summer!
Here is a recap:
Monday Evening - volunteers had the distinct pleasure of cleaning and loading up our barges in preparation for our early morning departure on the 23rd. We had a determined group of seven volunteers; Alan Steele, John Langermann, John Owens, Rich Lynch, Seth Wiseman, Ajit Jhangiani and Bob Green. They scoured the barges with brushes and soap and attached them with the proper tools and cleaning machinery. When they were done all three barges were like new, and looking better than ever. We then loaded oars, seats, safety equipment and tied towing ropes to ensure we really impressed the Nike crowd the next morning. We then enjoyed pizza and adult beverages in the boathouse before retiring. The coaches and volunteers couldn't believe how clean the barges looked the next day. Thanks for all your hard work Monday and we will be posting an ad next week for the seven of you to do house cleaning for any interested CRI members J
Tuesday morning - we had ten volunteers and coxswains arrive at CRI at 3:30am sharp. Yes that's right, 3:30am, 0'Dark hundred. It is not your average volunteer that is willing to show up that early. We had Emily Dwyer, Nina Boyer, Ajit Jhangiani, Anita Meiklejohn, Beth Yudelman, Chase Ackerman, Kim Rocco, Caitlain McDonald, Stephanie Gavell, and Theresa Welsh all there for the early morning prep. They were met with coffee and donuts to start the prepping of loading boxes, prepping coaches launches and tying up the barges to the launches for transporting to the Basin. This group helped us get off to an on time start down the river at 4:00am. Our goal was to make the trip downstream before the river traffic got busy and we were able to do that thanks to the volunteers.
Our trip down the river was easy and beautiful. We were treated to a great sunrise and a placid, calm basin when we arrived at the esplanade. We had 1 coxswain in each barge to steer and one volunteer in each barge to watch the tow rope, we also had a volunteer in each launch to watch the tow rope and help the coaches steer through the bridges. We got to the esplanade in quick order to prep the barges and get ready for the Nike crew. Before their arrival we were all treated to breakfast and more coffee on the esplanade.
Once Nike arrived, and met us near Community Boating, the coaches went into action. We only had an hour with the 28 Nike people, however the coaches got their crews working together and out into the basin rowing quickly. They worked on technique and racing strategies with vigor. The Nike crews loved the experience, especially with the Boston landmarks of the Prudential and Hancock towers in the background as well as the Hatch shell and the Citgo sign. After 45 minutes the three barges lined up for a 250 meter race. When done each participant took home a CRI Team Building shirt, a copy of Boys in the Boat, and each barge crew took home a medal. There were lots of happy faces and big smiles from the Nike crowd. Thanks to Vee Platzer, Brendan Mulvey and Patrick Larcom, our coaches for the day, we hit a home run with Nike. Our coaches and Volunteers really made this a special event for Nike. It's a rare organization that can pull together a crowd to clean dirty barges, get volunteers to show up at 3:30am for duty, and coaches that really worked hard to pull off a great event. Congratulations to all and we look forward to many more successful events this year and the ability to share our sport with the greater community.

Volunteering Opportunities
Business Engagment
|
Fulfilling our CRI mission of "Rowing for All" this summer, we are having an incredibly busy year of corporate team building events with multiple events on the water nearly every week. The key to making these events a success is the unbelievable volunteers from the CRI community who help provide an unforgettable experience for our team building groups.
We have many opportunities opening up every week, including the Charles River Rowing League which starts this week. Charles River Rowing League is similar to our regular corporate rows, but takes place over a 6-weel session and meets once a week on a day designated for that particular group of participants. It's fun! The first class is usually on the erg or in a barge. Every team graduates to 8+ starting the second or third week depending on how quickly the rowers take to the sport. All volunteers receive a meal and a great t-shirt - along with the gratitude of the participants!
Below is the link to sign up a session depending on your availability:

Corporate Challenge Cup
Win it for Your Company
|

Want to win the Corporate Challenge Cup for your company? You can do so through the Charles River Rowing League which got off to a great start this week. For the first week, the coaches were busy getting their boats organized and getting the new rowers comfortable with their rowing stroke on the ergs. Each CRRL group spent the first session on the ergs and touring the boathouse and getting their first water strokes in with the Dockbox. Week two will be on the water in the rowing catamarans, then Week three and beyond will be launching in 8+s. If you see these CRRL participants out there, please give them your encouragement, they are all very excited to learn to row. This year, Charles River Rowing League will run in 3 sessions throughout the year. - Session 2 starts the week of June 30th
- Session 3 starts the week of August 11th
If you know any individuals or companies interested in putting together a corporate team, have them reach out to Jeff Nelson at: jeff.nelson@commmunityrowing.org Once again, this year, all CRRL participants will be eligible to race for the Corporate Challenge Cup at the CRI Fall Classic Regatta on September 19th.

Host a Para Rower!
US National Team LTA 4+
|
CRI will be selecting the US National Team LTA 4+ that will compete at the World Championships this summer. Once the 4+ is selected, we will need host family homes for the athletes from July 16th - August 21st.
Host families have been very important to 'their' athlete. During rowers' time at CRI, they are away from home and undertaking a demanding training program to prepare for intense competition. The host family makes all the difference.Host families will receive a small stipend to cover expenses.
If you are interested in hosting one of these outstanding athletes, please contact Ellen Minzner, Head Coach for the USA LTA 4+ at ellen@communityrowing.org
Thank you for all of your support! |
