Charles River Clean Up Boat
Help Keep the River Free of Debris

2014 is the 11th year that the Charles River Clean Up Boat has kept the Charles River free of floating trash and marine debris.

Jeannie Marcus has helped on the Charles River Clean Up Boat for a few years now. The boat can never get upstream from CRI because its too shallow. Tom Nichols who runs that project said he would lend us nets and bags if there was someone who could drive a skiff from CRI to the Watertown dam.

So we are looking for a couple of volunteers, one who can drive a skiff from CRI to the Watertown dam, who can maneuver in and out of the nooks and crannies and another who can help with netting debris.

If you can help either this Saturday or next, from say 12 noon to 3 pm, please contact Nonna at: [email protected]

CRWA: Water Quality Flags
What Do the Colors Mean?

Community Rowing is one of the participating boathouse along the river that fly water quality flags during the summer as part of the Charles River Watershed Association (CRWA) Water Quality Notification Program.

CRWA's Water Quality Notification Program presents the daily flag colors of the river's health, which signify whether or not the river is safe for boating at ten boating locations from Watertown to Boston. Flag colors are based on bacteria levels and blue-green algae counts.

CRWA estimates bacteria levels using a model that takes into account a variety of environmental factors including antecedent rainfall and river flow. CRWA collects river samples for bacteria weekly to verify the model forecast. Blue-green algae monitoring is conducted at least every two weeks. Read more about the development of CRWA's bacteria prediction model

What do the flag colors mean?

Blue Flags:
Indicate suitable boating conditions

Yellow Flags:

Indicate inconclusive data to preclude a possible health risks

Red Flags:

Indicate potential health risks

Look for the flag flying at CRI at the top of Dock 3.
