Once again, Youth Competitive teams exhibited true CRI pride at this weekend's 10th Annual Lowell Invitational, 2k on the Merrimack River. On Saturday, the teams wrestled with downpours and threatening thunderstorms against heavy competition in preliminary head races, earning a spot for at least one boat in 28 sprint Finals races on Sunday. On Sunday, under sunny skies, Novice girls won a gold medal in the W1N4+ and silver medals in the W1F8+, the W2N8+, the W1F4+, and the W2N4+. Small boats added to the hardware with gold in the M2-, both silver and bronze in the W2-, and bronze in the W2x. The W4x contributed a bronze to the count, and the M2V4+ took both gold and silver in their grand Final. Other Varsity 8+ and 4+ boats rounded things out in grand Finals with gold in the M1V8+, the W2V8+, and the W3V8+, silver in the W1LTW8+, the W1V8+, the W1V4+, and the M2V8+, and bronze in the M1V4+ and the M3V8+. More details can be found at Lowell Invitational results.
In addition to these accomplishments and the medals around their necks, CRI rowers learned a great deal about both the river and many of their competitors, in preparation for next week's USRowing Northeast Junior District Championships back on the Merrimack River in Lowell.
A huge thank you to all the coaches for the excellent preparation, the parents for the sustaining food and cheering throughout the two long race days, and to our dedicated athletes for their successful racing. Congratulations all around!
Wishing all the teams the best in next week's USRowing Northeast Junior District Championships. Go CRI!!

CRI Rower Andrew Johnson
#RowToRioChat |
PRINCETON, N.J. - USRowing will hold its sixth monthly Row to Rio USRowing Training Center Athlete Twitter Chat with 2012 Paralympian Andrew Johnson on Wednesday, May 14 from 1-2 p.m. EDT.
The five-time national team member will share a whole new perspective on what it's like to stroke the legs, trunk and arms four with coxswain - without sight. The U.S. finished fourth in the event at the 2013 World Rowing Championships in Chungju, South Korea. In London, Johnson's crew finished sixth at the 2012 Paralympic Games.
Johnson, 24, was born in Greenwich, Conn., and began rowing at the Greenwich Rowing Club in 2005. He graduated from Connecticut College in 2012 and currently trains in Boston, Mass.
Mark your calendar for Wednesday, May 14, 1-2 p.m. EDT and tune in for the #RowToRioChat. During the live chat, be sure to follow and send your questions directly to Andrew Johnson (@akjrow) using hashtag #rowtoriochat.
ABOUT ROW TO RIO TWITTER CHATS On the second Wednesday of each month, members and fans have the opportunity to chat live with an athlete at the USRowing Training Center about training, nutrition, motivation and their pre-race superstitions. What is their favorite (or most hated) workout? What do they eat before a big erg test or race? What was it like to win an Olympic or world championships medal? Join us using hashtag #rowtoriochat.

Better Next Year:
A Coach's Performance Review & Improvement Plan
Learning from the previous year's performance can give you and your team a leg up next year, but only if those improvements you can see now actually make it into next year's plan.
Doing the same thing every year, because it's what we did last year, may be familiar but may not yield better performance. The nature of competition, one performance against another's performance, provides a working arena for coaches and athletes to interminably seek higher levels of performance. Like rowers who track fitness data and tailor training plans (e.g. Lactate Threshold), coaches also look for methods to improve h/her future coaching performance.
Dr. Ira Martin, a leadership scholar at the Coast Guard Academy and coach longevity expert, will work with coaches in this workshop to teach coaches how to analyze your prior season's performance and apply the methods of Performance Improvement & Organizational Efficacy to be even better next year. Join us to hear Dr. Martin present evidence-based techniques you can use to review your performance.
Learn to generate a plan from lessons learned this spring to becoming better next year!
Entrance: $5 entrance fee (CRI Staff are free)
Refreshments: Hot pizza & Cold drink are served!
