MAINTAIN YOUR MOMENTUM: A
Cross-Training Primer

MAINTAIN YOUR MOMENTUM:  With the focus of spring rowing geared up toward increasing training volume & intensity, maximizing water time and rowing specificity, it becomes important to maintain a rower's winter gains.  Numerous studies point to cross-training during the in-season phase as beneficial to prevent overuse injuries.  "In fact, it is this avoidance of overuse injuries that is one of the strongest arguments in favor of cross-training.  Additional endurance work can be performed, with less strain placed on the [rowing-specific] muscles and joints, which may indeed be getting active rest, while at the same time there is still an adequate workout for the heart and lungs (Joe Dunbar, Director, IPro Interactive)."

Neal Thompson, Founder, CrossFit Boston, will provide attendees with practical and effective strategies for all rowing programs, including those who install daily cross-training and those who employ cross-training sessions via multiple weekday sessions.

Concept 2 February Military Challenge

Concept 2 sponsored the February online Military Challenge. The CRI Military Team did a great job this year, with our team members coming from all services, both active duty and veterans.  Last year was our first year in this competition, when we competed against 61 other military units worldwide and came in 10th with only 19 members.  This year we competed against 70 teams, but we recruited hard and picked up 10 new members, mostly local, including one formerly with the German military, but also with some help with team members from Guam, Switzerland (RAF), New Mexico, Rhode Island, and Africa.   With Clark Esler and Peter Crocker leading the way at about 300K meters each, this year we placed 5th behind, but in the same league with, some really tough and prominent competitors - i.e. the U.S. Navy, the USAF, the French Defense Ministry, and the U.S. Marines.  A huge well done to the CRI Military Team.

And a HUGE THANK YOU to team captain Brooks Helmick! Brooks rallied the troops and kept everyone motivated with his evening notes.

Gateway to Gold Event
March 29th at Community Rowing

Launched in 2013, Gateway to Gold is the new U.S. Paralympics initiative for identifying and recruiting Paralympic eligible athletes who show an ability to compete in the future at an elite level. Gateway to Gold participants go through sport-specific tests and evaluations to determine if they are ready for the next level of opportunity in Paralympic sport.

The event, for youth and adults, is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 29, at the Harry Parker Boathouse.

The Gateway to Gold talent identification event will introduce individuals with physical disabilities and visual impairments, including youth, adults and military veterans, to the Paralympic sports of rowing, cycling and biathalon, with a goal of identifying hopefuls for future U.S. Paralympic Teams. As a part of the clinic, prospective athletes will be tested on a variety of skills that can help determine their aptitude for Paralympic sport.

"The U.S. Paralympic Team strives to be the best in the world. But we cannot get to the top of the podium without the help of our community partners like Community Rowing, Inc.," said Charlie Huebner, USOC Chief of Paralympics. "With Community Rowing's help in hosting this Gateway to Gold talent identification clinic, U.S. Paralympics might find the next great Paralympic champion in your backyard."

Gateway to Gold talent identification events are being held throughout the country. For registration information on the Boston event, please visit www.communityrowing.org or call 617.964.2455

Participation is free, and preregistration is required.  To register for Gateway to Gold click here or visit: Gateway to Gold Registration

Hi everyone,

The CRI annual scullers meeting will be Wednesday, March 26 at 7:30pm upstairs in the classroom.  You are all invited and hope to see many of you there.

We will welcome back Mike Baker as our ongoing coach for coached logbook sculling. Unfortunately Elliot Hovey will not be returning to coach - we will bring you up to date on that.

Help Us Keep Safety First
Looking for Volunteers...
As part of a club wide effort to keep safety as our first priority, we are looking for volunteers to help in a big way, by updating/confirming contact information for our CRI Launch Safety cards.

A crucial part of keeping everyone safe on the water, our CRI Launch Safety cards have EMS 911 addresses for all the boathouses and takeouts on the river enabling our coaches to let responders know a precise location should help be required.

If you would like to help, please contact Nonna at:

Thank you!
