COMMUNITY ROWING INC.'S HARRY PARKER BOATHOUSE IS HONORED
American Institute of Architects Awards National Prize for Excellence
The American Institute of Architects has named the Harry Parker Boathouse, designed by Anmahian Winton Architects of Cambridge, Massachusetts, as a recipient of its 2014 Institute Honor Awards program. The Charles River home of Community Rowing, the Harry Parker Boathouse was completed in the fall of 2008.
The high honor is awarded for achievements that "elevate the general quality of architectural practice, establish a standard of excellence against which all architects can measure performance, and inform the public of the breadth and value of architecture," according to the Institute's announcement.
"This building is beautiful not just in aesthetics, but also in operability," the jury of professionals said in making the award. "The design purpose is clearly conveyed by borrowing from the nomenclature of oars and regattas." "Simply done, clean, clear design concept, beautiful siting, and well done from a sustainability standpoint," they added. "The moves are limited but impactful, and the result is calm but interesting." The panel also noted that the natural ventilation through external wood panels "animates the building skin; it is dramatic and well conceived."
The Harry Parker Boathouse won the Boston Society of Architects' award for the best new building of the year in the city in 2010. "We have the most active and dynamic rowing club in the world, located in the best rowing facility anywhere," said Bruce Smith, Executive Director of Community Rowing. "And a huge part of our success, besides our dedicated staff and members, is our functional and beautiful home on the Charles River. We're gratified that the AIA recognized the great work of the team that created the Harry Parker Boathouse."

January Challenge Update...
15 Million Meters Strong!!
Wednesday, January 15th is the last day to enroll individually in the January Challenge with your own logbook (remember to join the CRI Team).
CRI is now in first place in the Concept 2 January Challenge! We have been battling for first with the French Indoor Rowers Team - we lead at night but by morning they have moved ahead again. We need to pull together for a surge and stay ahead! After 13 days of the challenge, we have logged 15 million meters. If we rowed these 15 million meters heading due west on Latitude 41, we would have passed over the United States, the Pacific, and we are now in China, just west of Beijing. We are half way around the world and ahead of our 2013 pace! Wednesday, January 15th is the last day to enroll individually in the January Challenge with your own logbook (remember to join the CRI Team). After this date, you can still participate by recording your meters on the clipboards in the boat house and they'll be entered under a team logbook (e.g. CRI Woman/Man). If you are erging here, please, record your meters... We need everyone's!! Go CRI!

Para Rowing in the Spotlight
Andrew Johnson Interview
|
Andrew Johnson, a para rower who trains and works with us here at CRI is one of four athletes being featured in a documentary, which will follow the athletes as they train and compete for a spot on the US National Team later this year.
The athletes the documentary follows are LTA rower and 5 time National team member Andrew Johnson of CRI, AS rower and 2013 US team member Dan Ahr of MedStar in DC, AS rower Margaret Stran of Alabama Adaptive Athletics in Tuscaloosa and a TA athlete who is new to the sport. Each athlete has proven they are not defined by their disability and their stories will make a great impact for many people.
The producers of the documentary think these athletes, and their stories, will be a great source of encouragement for people of all abilities, hopefully bringing adaptive rowing to the forefront of adaptive sports. Filming will continue into the spring until team selections, with the finished film being completed around this time next year.
