Veterans Day at CRI
A Celebration of Gratitude
|
Twenty-six volunteers arrived early on Monday morning, November 11th, to set up a special row for CRI and visiting military veterans. After a special ceremony with a focus on sacrifice, caring, and gratitude, sixteen military veterans took to the water flanked by CRI volunteers and staff. All participants met and mingled after the row at breakfast set up and provided by the GS2 team. During a pause in breakfast, all stood and voices joined in singing "The Star Spangled Banner". The day was deemed a success, as one new military veteran participant remarked, " As a Vietnam Era veteran, I can truly say that today was the first time I felt truly appreciated for serving my country. I was very moved by this gesture." CRI Youth are considerate and caring. CRI military veterans were pleased and surprised as Coach Vee opened posters designed to recognize our military veterans signed by members of our youth teams. Way to go Youth Comp Teams. Thank you.

Novice Teams Finish Fall Season
Merrimack Chase
|
Girls' and Boys' Novice teams ended their Fall season with the traditional Merrimack Chase hosted by Essex Rowing Club on the Merrimack River. While the regatta bore the traditional motto "Fun, Fast, Friends," and boasted the traditional good food, the girls' line-ups were selected with the less than traditional draws from a hat. This made the boat lineups random, and allowed rowers to mingle more than usual during the season. Even better, the boats were made up of all middle and high school age ranges, for a true mix, and coxswain selections that morning for some last minute obstacles which the girls met with their usual aplomb. Because of CRI's depth, the random approach allowed for a more competitive race for all clubs competing, and CRI girls still came out with all four 8+ crews finishing in the top 6, showing that these girls sure are FAST! Boys' Novice took a more traditional approach to their 8+ line-ups, and showed how fast they are by coming in1st with a sizable 42 second, and other boats coming in 5th, 6th, 7th of 9. Kudos to both teams for their successes this weekend and throughout the season! (Results Page: https://www.regattacentral.com/regatta/results/2642_6605.pdf)

Coaching Education Symposium Lecture Series
At CRI Tuesday, November 19, 6:30-8:00pm
|
A Presentation by Sports Psychologist Dr. Adam Naylor:
Strategies coaches can employ to help athletes stay focused, stay motivated
and get the most out of winter training.
The indoor training season brings with it many challenges.Staying committed to training is often much more difficult without the support of teammates, coaches, and rowing colleagues. Moreover, a big challenge is how to maintain an athlete's adherence to fitness training while being confronted by pressures such as: a varying schedule, less daylight, cold temperatures, holiday travel & family obligations, out-of-routine & on-the-road surroundings.
Evidence suggests that the mechanisms of detraining (e.g., decreased VO2max) occur as promptly as 2 weeks after exercise cessation. It is therefore essential for competitive athletes to miss no more than 7-14 days total of training (
Neufer, PD, Sports Med., 1989).
What are the situational, psychological, social, and behavioral components that can either derail athletes from training, or inspire them to train smarter/harder? What strategies can we employ to help athletes stay focused, stay motivated, and get the most out of the indoor training season?
Join us to hear Adam Naylor share more than 15 years of expertise as a practitioner sports psychology. Gain knowledge on how to improve your athletes' indoor season results, and give them strategies to succeed!
Entrance Fee: $5 (CRI Staff attend for free) Refreshments will be served.
Upcoming Symposium Dates: Tuesday, December 17, 2013 Tuesday, January 21, 2014

January Challenge!!
Looking for Volunteers
|
The Head of the Charles is history, as is the Fish. Winter training hasn't started, but I've been getting questions about the January Challenge. This is the only event where CRI competes as one entry and we've finished first among "real" teams the past few years. Really great spirit booster for the community. And CRI does like a challenge! We're looking for volunteers to make this year a success and here are some ways you might help: 1) Organize an erg party on Jan 1 or any Sunday in January (that's 1/5, 1/12, 1/19 or 1/20, 1/26) - pick a movie or an internet-streamed sports event, and project it. Can be afternoon or after dark. Get the word out.
2) Help with the entry of meters from the clipboards and setting up clipboard accounts. 3) Draft progress reports/motivational messages. Jane, who has done so fabulously in the past would be glad to share the tools she has evolved, but of course we are open to new ideas. To let us know if you can be counted on to help, please email Nonna ( nonna@communityrowing.org) or Jane ( jgmorse@morses.net).
Thanks, and GO CRI!!

Do You Teach Voice or Acting?
Looking for Someone w/ Experience in Voice Projection

We're looking for a CRI member that has a background in teaching voice projection. Great topic for coaches right? We thought it'd be a great way for someone to share some expertise in having a session with the IRL Fellows to help them all learn to project better. Ideal would be someone with a background coaching acting or possibly singing. Want to share your expertise? Contact Matt Lehrer at: matt.lehrer@communityrowing.org
