The CRI Comp Men enjoyed unprecedented success this past weekend in Boston with a best-ever 5th place finish (out of 45) in the Senior Master 8 and a 7th place finish (out of 45)  in the Club Single by true novice Anton Hoffman.  The 8 captured 5th place ahead of vaunted 1980 Rowing Club and Etats Unis (made up of members of the 1980 US Olympic Rowing Team) and 38 other programs.  Starting in the 11th spot, the 8 gave some space to the boat starting immediately ahead,  San Diego Rowing Club to insure cleaner water and a less frantic start to the race.  The boat established a solid rhythm at 32 strokes per minute and rowed with splits between the fourth and sixth fastest at each checkpoint down the course.

At the end of the day, consistency, patience and a very strong last split resulted in a finish time of 16:06.9, 1.9 seconds out of fourth (San Diego) and 10.6 out of third (Penn AC).  While the team is thrilled with their performance, they realized that the First and Second place crews, Marin and Palm Beach, set the bar at exceptionally high levels by beating the field by over 30 seconds.

Coaches Matt Zattorski and Jon Smith both commented that Marin and Palm Beach took control of the race in the first half by pushing out to a 15 second lead, but really blew the race apart in the segment between Weld Boathouse and Cambridge Boat Club by extending their lead an additional 13 seconds.

Anton Hoffman's race in the club single was a little more perilous than that of the 8.  Anton started with Bow #40 and ended up passing multiple boats on his way down the course.  This takes energy, patience, and expertise, particularly when coupled with the challenging headwind of Sunday.  Coach Smith Commented: "Anton rowed a great race.  He has so much to learn. I am very excited to work with him as he gains confidence, mileage and speed.  He has a ton of potential in this boat.".

One of the other members of the Men's team commented, "Anton went from 'What's a single' in March to a 7th place finish here.  And he did it with his shirt on!"

While Anton may have finished just outside the medals, there is a silver lining: he will be able to race the Club Single next year from the #2 slot.

In addition, many of the Comp Men filled in with out of town crews and in College Alumni boats.  The Comp Men will spend the next several weeks consolidating technique, posting mileage and building a platform from which to enter winter training.

Youth Teams Snag 17 Medals, 4 Fish Heads
Head of the Fish at Saratoga

Youth Competitive Varsity and Novice teams traveled to Saratoga Springs, NY to stake their claim at the Head of the Fish, gathering 17 medals in 36 4K races on Fish Creek and Saratoga Lake.  Among the gains were 4 of the coveted mounted fish heads, given to first place winning teams, and now proudly on display at CRI.

Single scullers raced on Saturday, with the bulk of racing on Sunday, starting in subfreezing temperatures and ending in fiercely kicking wind.  A summary of results follows; for complete results, including competitors and their times, as well as boat line-ups, please refer to  2013 Head of the Fish Results and Head of the Fish 2013 - CRI Entries.

Thank you to our host Saratoga Rowing Association, to our parent volunteers for keeping the athletes fed, to CRI travel coordinators, to all those cheering the athletes along, and to our tireless coaches.  And congratulations to all our athletes on well-rowed races and exceptional teamwork!

CRI Hosts Para-Rowing Classification Workshop
Three CRI Staff Members Earn Certification

CRI was proud to host a 2 day U.S. Rowing Classification Workshop on October 17 and 18, the largest classification workshop ever convened. FISA Head Classifier Judy Morrison taught the course with the help of Regina Navia. Coaches, athletes, and medical professionals travelled from Sarasota, Chicago, as well as Massachusetts locales to receive this highly specialized training.

Sandra Cardillo, Dorian Weber, and Chris Obusek successfully completed the training and are ready to begin classifying athletes.  Additionally, Dr. Laura Bajor, VA Boston neuropsychiatrist, and Deszarae Busi, Cerebral Palsy of Massachusetts physical therapist completed the training and are ready to participate as medical classifiers. Dr. Bajor rows in the morning Mil/Vet sweeps program and provides consultation and training to CRI regarding PTSD and other military veterans needs. Deszarae recently joined CRI through CP of Massachusetts as a consultant and service provider for military veterans and adaptive athletes.

Tom Darling, U.S. Rowing Director of Pararowing, Deb Arenberg, U.S. Rowing Adaptive Programs Development Specialist, and Mark McAndrew, Concept2 Adaptive Rowing also participated in this workshop. In addition to the training,  this workshop proved to be a great opportunity for connecting with others of vast experience and knowledge in field of pararowing.

River Traffic Pattern Alert
Anderson and Weeks Bridges

Anderson Bridge: Work will resume in the Boston Arch of Anderson bridge Monday 21 October. This means the boom will be deployed and the barge will be back in the arch. It will be as it was two weeks ago.

For rowers this means upstream traffic only through the Cambridge arch, downstream traffic only through the center arch.

Weeks Footbridge: On Tuesday, October 22, work will begin. This is the bridge downstream of Anderson bridge.

Some more particulars are:

Work is planned to begin on Tuesday, October 22, 2013

The barge to be used will be a series of EZ Docks approximately 10' X 20' total

The barge will have only about 6-inches of freeboard (fairly low to the water)

The intention is to store the barge on the Cambridge side of the Basin
when it's not in use

Mon-Fri 7am-3pm the barge is expected to be beneath the Cambridge-side span: boaters are asked to avoid this span during this time

Placement of silt booms under the Boston and Cambridge-side arches near the shore is required, rowers are asked to be mindful of these booms to avoid catching oars on them.
