Save the Date - Friday, May 17th
Boathouse Work PARTY!!
|
We are going to host a Work Party on May 17th with a new format, and it is going to be fun! May 17th is a Friday, and the work party will run from 6 to 9 pm. The idea is that we avoid taking up a weekend day both for staff and volunteers, and we make the event fun, aka emphasis on the 'PARTY' in Work Party!!
Dave has identified about 15 tasks, and we've published a sign-up genius so you can see what needs doing and sign up for a task in advance if you see something that excites you and so people will know what they are supposed to do when they arrive. Each task will have a job description and a person in charge and all the materials required.
We'll set up some music, get the grill going, and serve cold, refreshing beverages... Tell your fellow rowers, teammates and other members to save the date!!
Check out the SignUp Genius here:

Members Making a Splash
Henriette Lazaridis Power and Rick Beyer
We are so thrilled to announce some very exciting goings on for two of our members.
Henriette Lazaridis Power
 | Henriette was featured The Boston Globe Magazine April 28th |
|
Henriette Lazaridis Power has published her novel, The Clover House, to wide acclaim. The Clover House follows a Greek-American woman who discovers the secret to a wartime family tragedy when she returns to her mother's native Greece to sift through an uncle's inheritance. The novel is published by Ballantine Books, a division of Random House and was a Target Emerging Authors selection for April.
Ever the rower, on April 2nd, launch day, Henriette held a symbolic launch of her book on the Charles for herself and a few rowing friends. Putting the book in a plastic bag and setting it in her boat she shoved off and took it for a little spin. WHDH did a thirty-second clip of the book launch which aired on that night's 5:00 news! (Couldn't get the link to the news video clip to work, so sorry!)
Henriette will read from The Cover House at Newtonville Books in Newton Centre, May 14 at 7 P.M. To read more about Henriette and her book, and other venues where she will read, visit: www.henriettepower.com
Rick Beyer
Rick Beyer, often found sculling on the Charles, is a best-selling author, an award winning documentary producer, and a long-time history enthusiast as you will learn when reading his website rickbeyer.net .
The Ghost Army, a documentary film by Rick, will premier on PBS Tuesday, May 21st at 8pm (locally on WGBH Ch. 2). The film, based on interviews with veterans and years of effort, tells the story of a secret U.S. Army unit sent into action in Normandy.
Kept secret for more than forty years, Rick lets the world in on the men in the unit, who they were and what they accomplished with an unusual array of weapons. As described on The Ghost Army website the mission of this secret unit, "was to use bluff, deception, and trickery to save lives.."
Winner of the Audience Award at the Salem Film Festival and Official Selection of the GI Film Festival, Rick's documentary is being described as eye-opening, riveting, fascinating and an astonishment. Mark your calendars now, and don't miss the premier of The GHOST ARMY.

Competitive Youth Weekend Recap
Racing at Phillips Andover Academy
|
CRI Girls Varsity dominated the competition at the race hosted by Phillips Andover Academy at which our junior boys and girls raced the host team as well as the St. Paul's School. The girls swept their side of the regatta, winning in 1V, 2V, 3V and 4V races, all with quite healthy margins. CRI Varsity Boys had a successful day as well - finishing first in the 1V and 2V eights and second in 3V, 4V and 5V eights. Saturday's result presents a new milestone for the boys team, as this is the first time that CRI boys 1V edged out Andover's first boat, last year's NEIRA 8+ champions, who have returned all eight rowers from last year.
Sunday's 1500M 4+ racing on Lake Cochituate at the Wayland-Weston Invitational was just as exciting. CRI rowers advanced to Grand Finals in nine of ten heats, with girls winning both 1st and 3rd place finishes in the 5V Grand Final and 2nd place in the 2V Grand Final, and boys clinching 2nd place finishes in 2V, 3V, and 4V Grand Finals.
The Novice Girls also posted strong results at the Novice Challenge in Lowell. The girls won the 1N4 and the 3N8, and the 1N8 placed third.
Thanks to our weekend hosts, Phillips Andover Wayland-Weston and Lowell High School Crew! And congratulations to our CRI rowers!
Many thanks to our veteran team photographer, Gerry Roy, for these great pictures from the weekend. To view many more photos of your athlete, please go to: http://garoyimaging.com/

Are You a Lifeguard?
Lifeguard Volunteers Wanted
|
Lifeguards wanted! As part of our partnership with the Boston Public Schools, we would like to offer field trips to the boathouse for participating schools. The Boston Public Schools have a requirement for all water activities that a lifeguard be present for the outings. So, we are asking for any CRI members who are also current lifeguards to help out with these school outings. Most of the field trips would take place on Fridays, from 12-2:30, but some may be scheduled at other times. If you are a current lifeguard and would like to help out, please contact Ellen Minzner, Director of Outreach, at ellen@communityrowing.org.
