Dear Friends,
Many of the Chamber members are small business owners and I know they have been following various issues relating to the Affordable Care Act (ACA), e.g., the employer mandate and the healthcare insurance exchange (marketplace).
EMPLOYER MANDATE
The Obama administration has delayed a crucial provision of the ACA, giving businesses with over 50 employees an extra year to comply with a requirement that they provide their workers with health insurance.
The government will postpone enforcement of this employer mandate until 2015. Under the provision, companies with 50 or more workers face a fine as much as $3,000 per employee if they don't offer affordable insurance. Companies with less than 50 employees (the vast percentage of companies in the US) are exempt from this requirement.
The delay in the employer mandate allows affected companies more time to calculate the cost of providing insurance versus the cost of penalties for not providing insurance and/or adjust their health-care coverage.
HEALTH CARE INSURANCE EXCHANGE (MARKETPLACE)
Beginning on October 1, individual health insurance plans will be offered on a healthcare insurance exchange (marketplace). Insurance plans in the Marketplace are offered by private companies and they will cover a core set of benefits called "essential health benefits," as required by the ACA. The Marketplace will simplify your search for health coverage by gathering the options available in Dallas in one place. You can compare plans based on price, benefits, quality, and other features important to you before you make a choice.
You get a clear picture of what premiums you'd pay and what benefits and protections you'd get before you enroll. Compare plans based on what's important to you, and choose the combination of price and coverage that fits your needs and budget.
No plan can turn you away or charge you more because you have an illness or medical condition. They must cover treatments for these conditions and plans can't charge women more than men for the same plan.
While all insurance plans are offered by private companies, the Marketplace in Texas will be run by the federal government. In addition to resources on the Exchange website (https://www.healthcare.gov), you can also get help online, by calling 1-800-318-2596, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. (TTY: 1-855-889-4325)
Sincerely,
Scott Chase, Lawyer 2013 Board or Directors Chair

Oak Cliff Chamber to Purchase Building at 1001 N. Bishop
|
The Oak Cliff Chamber has the office building at 1001 N. Bishop under contract for purchase. This building has been vacant for many years and is in need of extensive repairs, but it is our vision to renovate the property and use part of it as the Chamber's headquarters, part of it as office space (executive suites) for local business people, and also allow organizations throughout the community to use the meeting rooms.
We Need Your Help! In order to accomplish this, the zoning on the property must be restored to allow "office use" (it was previously a medical office). On September 11th the zoning case goes before the City Council and we need as much support from the community as possible to make this vision a reality. Read more>>
