Letter from the Chairman
Try Something Different...It Could Improve Your Business!

Yolanda Gills Stephen Covey, author of the book "7 Habits of Highly Effective People" gave his definition of the word "insanity," that is -- to keep doing the same things over and over again and expect to achieve different results!  When looked at objectively, we do the same things in our businesses and nonprofit organizations year after year and wonder why there is no progress.  As the end of another year approaches, I challenge you to try something different.  Try to implement the following:
  1. Focus on the results you want.  You can't be all things to all people!  Write it down..this will be your plan to get it done.
  2. Measure the activity that produces the results that you want.  If you want more customers...measure the activities or processes that you have in place to create more customers, change as needed and measure the results of changes made.
  3. Work ON your business and not IN your business.  This means that you'll have to step back and actually manage the business and the work of others.
  4. Create a difference.  Make your business or organization unique.  The aim must not be to merely satisfy your customers or patrons.  The aim should be to "dazzle" them -- to be memorable!
  5. Develop Performance Standards.  Performance standards do several things: they translate your vision into a series of behavior, they provide for objective measurement, and they can set your business or organization apart from others
  6. Communicate differently and effectively.  Talk, write, and display on the web.  In simple terms, benefits, benefits,
clearly communicate the benefits you provide to those dealing with your organization!

On behalf of the Chamber's Board of Directors, it has been a pleasure to serve during the 2012 calendar year.  To those businesses, organizations, and individuals that actively partnered with us this year, we thank you for your continued support.  If you are new to Oak Cliff or still sitting on the sidelines, we invite you to join us and help make our community an even better place to live, work, grow your business and play!

Try something different...
