Dear Friends,
Our mission is to promote economic development and improve quality of life within the area of Oak Cliff! Typically economic development is narrowly defined by some as real estate development projects (i.e. achieving infrastructure improvements and code enforcements only). While the Chamber's role does include activities supporting such projects, our focus is much broader. Economic development also includes, but is not limited to encouraging the creation of new jobs, as well as attracting, retaining and helping local businesses to grow. Promotion and improvement of quality of life encompasses coordinating the efforts of members, and all levels of government to affect change in civic, educational, cultural, historical and governmental priorities of the community.
The community has many concerns and the Oak Cliff Chamber of Commerce exists to help address these issues. This is done by our willingness to work with our members and others to build alliances, by a willingness to listen and find mutual interest points, and by brainstorming solutions.
Some of our more recent and upcoming projects are:
- Working with development experts and City officials to change incentive policies that will attract more jobs, large retailers, and market rate housing in the southwest quadrant of the City
- Working on major zoning ordinances that affect the UNT, Oak Cliff Gateway, Bishop Davis, and Jefferson Boulevard areas. We intend to focus further on other areas around the Zoo, Dallas Executive Airport and the Southwest Center Mall
- Providing businesses and nonprofit organizations opportunities to advertise, network, and develop relationships with those who may be instrumental in promoting growth
- Designing and providing educational series that target small businesses
- Hosting summits and forums in areas of healthcare, housing, education, and transportation
Today, as businesses and communities are more dependent upon each other for their success, the Chamber's role has evolved. This Chamber is here to help build a stronger community by keeping our membership focused and involved in top business, civic and social issues and priorities in the community. We hope you'll make the most of your membership by taking advantage of the opportunities we provide. Get started now by marking your calendars to attend our annual Golf Tournament on September 24, 2012 to be held at the recently renovated Stevens Park Golf Course, and also plan to attend our Small Business Seminar at UNT Dallas on October 17, 2012. If you are not involved, let me encourage you to do so immediately! If your issue or concern is not addressed, feel free to come in and talk with us about it. We aim to provide value to all those we are privileged to serve. Sincerely,
Yolanda F. Gills, CPA 2012 Board of Directors Chair |
