Beauty Break Newsletter
September 2014
BeautyScoop packet

Labor Day has passed, and summer has come to an end. Even if you have already taken the steps needed to physically recover from the tolls of summer (see the last newsletter!), it might take a little longer to mentally get back into the swing of things. Now is the best time to keep indulgences in check: After all, before you know it, it will be the holiday season!

Summer is great for long days of socializing and outdoor barbeques, but, along with the fun times, you might have found yourself having a few too many summer drinks or potluck parties. Read on to see how September is the best time to "fall back" into healthy eating habits!

1. It is soup season! Soup is one meal choice that most people avoid in summer, for obvious reasons! However, most soups are not only easy to make, but they can be as healthy as you make them. Additionally, soup is a great appetizer, especially if it is broth-based. By starting your meal with soup (rather than the typical BBQ appetizers of chips!), you can fill up before the heavier, main meal.

2. Switch from iced lattes to hot tea.
Iced coffees and coffee drinks are essential in summer. Not only are they delicious, but they are available everywhere! Popular chains like Starbucks offer "Happy Hour" specials of half-priced specialty drinks. Although this is a good deal for your wallet, the frappuccin
os are definitely not a good deal for your waistline. The typical iced frappuccino from Starbucks has over 350 calories and 10 grams of fat! Instead of buying these types of dessert-like drinks, indulge in some hot tea. Available in all sorts of flavors -- fruity, green, or even sweet -- tea is proven to have fantastic anti-oxidant properties that are good for your skin. Plus, if you enjoy milk in your tea, try adding in some BeautyScoop instead!

3.  Pumpkin is everywhere, and it is good for you! As long as you eat real pumpkin, that is. Although the fall pumpkin craze includes things like doughnuts, lattes, and bagels, real pumpkins and pumpkin puree are both delicious and full of health benefits. Pumpkins make the list of anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory foods, and they are also an excellent source of fiber, carotids, and vitamins A and C. Additionally, pumpkin seeds are high in plant-based fatty acids that help improve brain function and promote healthy skin. Pumpkin is the fall superstar in more ways than one!

Even though summer fruits and vegetables are no longer in season, that doesn't mean that healthy eating is harder to come by. Research has found it to be quite the opposite: To many people, fall is the time to try to get back on track and into a routine. Winter poses its own challenges, so embrace fall while you can. Remember, a healthy inside shows on the outside!
