Myth or medical miracle?   (like "true" or "false" but actually even more like "false" or "true"!)

1.  Multi-grain bread is more nutritious that whole grain bread
2.  Brown eggs are healthier than white eggs
3.  Red wine is the only alcoholic drink with nutritional value
4.  Farm raised salmon is safer than wild salmon
5.  Bottled  water is better than New York City tap water
6.  Nuts are a good low-fat protein snack
7.  Sugar substitutes cause cancer
8.  Vegetarian diets help you lose weight
9.  Supplements are not necessary if you eat a healthy diet
10. Decaf coffee has no caffeine

1.  Multi-grain means that the product contains more than one grain.  Whole grain means that all parts of the grain kernel are used.  Whole grain foods are healthier because they contain nutrients and fiber.  The RDA for adults is 3 1-ounce (28 - gram) servings per day. (Answer: Myth)

2.  Brown eggs come from "brown" (red-feathered) chickens with red ear lobes, and white eggs come from white-feathered chickens with white ear lobes.  Brown eggs tend to be more expensive, because they are generally bigger, but nutritionally, all eggs are the same...unless, they are organic.
(Answer: Myth)

3.  White wine may be just as heart healthy as red wine because it contains grape pulps, rich in polyphenols that are good for the heart.  In addition, champagne, made from both red and white grapes, also contains polyphenols .  Champagne drinkers have a higher level of nitric oxide in their bodies, which can reduce the occurrence of blood clots, and lower the risk of heart disease and stroke. (Answer: Myth)

4.  Farm raised salmon may have 16x more PCB's (polychlorinated biphenyls = cancer causing ingredients) than wild salmon.  It often contains antibiotics, pesticides and dyes.  It has less omega-3 fatty acids, 20% less protein and  20% more fat than wild salmon. (Answer: Myth)

5.  New York City tap water is tasty and economical.  But, is bottled water better?  Not if you measure it by the safety testing requirements.  While tap water must meet stringent daily safety tests, bottled water is only tested once a month. Tap water contains trace amounts of chlorine that  keeps water free of bacterial invasion, and  tap water may also can contain fluoride to keep children's teeth strong and protect them from dental caries.  (Answer: Myth)

6.  Nuts are good food!  They are heart healthy snacks with "good" fats that lower "bad" cholesterol levels.  Rich in omega-3 fatty acids, nuts can prevent dangerous heart rhythms that can lead to heart attacks.  Nuts provide fiber that makes you feel full.   They contain Vitamin E and L-arginine to help prevent plaque build-up, and to keep artery walls healthy and flexible. However, with 80% of the nut's nutrition coming from fat, and only 20% or less from protein, nuts are calorie dense and to be eaten in moderation. (Answer: Myth)

7. The FDA task force confirms that sugar substitutes have not been proven to cause cancer, but there is an awful strange correlation between the increasing consumption of artificial sweeteners and the rising incidence of pancreatic cancer.  Hmm...the pancreas controls the sugars in your body.  Could there be some kind of a strangely coincidental connection?  (Answer: Myth)

8. Vegetarian foods can be highly caloric and contribute to weight gain.  Soy, for example, is generally considered a healthy protein because it is low in sodium, cholesterol and fat. But...it is high in calories.  A cup of edamame has 375 calories as it is a legume and not a vegetable.  (Tricky, because it's green...we know!) Quinoa is a healthy grain and good source of protein, but a cup of quinoa packs a whopping 635 calories.  And, although most fruits and veggies are low in calories, the avocado is not!  At 240 calories per cup, avocados must be eaten by overweight vegetarians in moderation! (Answer: Myth)

9.  Typically, supplements are recommended to augment a diet that is lacking. But, supplements not only offer value to those whose intake is insufficient, they provide much needed benefits to those who have inadequate absorption from a healthy, balanced diet.  Did you know that many supplement users --- as well as people who eat nutritionally sound diets --- still have problems in their skin, hair and nails, related to inadequate absorption of dietary peptides and lipids?
(Answer: Myth)

10.  Decaf coffee has less caffeine than regular coffee, but only caffeine-free beverages have no caffeine! (Answer: Myth)
