Blue nails may simply define your sense of style, but did you know that they can also signify sickness? Before you picture your nails as a blank canvas for creative artwork this season, and enter the world of nail glitter, shine, vibrant colors, and elaborate designs, make sure you get a clean bill of health in the nail department.
Here's what your natural nail color says about you:
Yellow - Nails that have an overall yellowish hue and remain yellow days after nail polish has been removed may signify diabetes. Nails that have yellow pits or depressions may signal psoriatic arthritis, or a connective tissue or autoimmune disorder that can be associated with hair loss.
Brown - Nails that have an overall brownish hue may be the result of smoking, while brown spots under the nails may be markers of melanoma. Brown bands immediately located under the white part of the nail may be a sign of liver disease, congestive heart failure or diabetes.
Red - Thin red lines under the nail may represent splinter hemorrhages and be associated with heart valve infection or vacsulitis. A red lunula, or crescent-shaped area at the bottom of the nail, may be a sign of rheumatoid arthritis.
Blue - Blue nails may simply be a sign of cold, or they may signal decreased oxygen and/or hemoglobin, and be associated with respiratory disorders such as asthma, COPD, emphysema, chronic bronchitis and pneumonia.
White - Nails that have an overall whitish or pale color may be associated with anemia, while white spots may simply represent a prior injury.
And, here's what your selected nail color says about you:
Metallic Nails - Those who love to steal the spotlight can take nail embellishment to a new level with these shimmering shades of gold, silver, and copper. Metallic nails add a glamorous finish to any outfit and can be worn for all occasions. This nail design will make sure all eyes are on you.
Artistic Accents - Ready to unleash your dark and mysterious side? One of the top trends to hit the runway this year are edgy designs, including "bloody tips," jagged tips, and shadowy tips. As one of the more extreme trends, these artistic accents are great if you're feeling adventurous and are looking to turn a few heads.
Pale Nails - If you believe that being stylish means toning it down, you'll be happy to know that light neutral shades were all the rage at Fashion Week. Pale nails are a simple and subtle way to keep your nails looking stylish, understated and elegant.
Just like clothes and jewelry, it's the color and details that define nail art. From neutral shades to edgy accents and bold metallics, healthy nails and a great manicure are among the most stylish accessories of the new year.
