As an icon of beauty, Angelina Jolie once surprisingly said, “I think scars are sexy because it means you made a mistake that led to a mess.” While some scars mark a life well-lived, many can be painful reminders of abuse, trauma, illness and tragedy. All scars have the power to remind us of our past and affirm the indisputable evidence of healing.

Every scar tells a story. For some it’s a badge of honor, and unfortunately for others, it can be a distressing memory and a mark of shame. What does your SCAR say about you?

Whether due to injury or surgery, you may have a scar that you wish to revise or minimize. Dr. Yagoda provides numerous surgical and non-surgical treatments that can improve the appearance of your scar:

Pressure and Massage Therapy
The simple act of massage (2 minutes per day for six weeks!) will bring blood flow and oxygen to the skin which will soften, lighten and flatten the scar. You can use Vitamin E, cocoa butter, olive oil or nothing at all. Massage alone will do the trick! In certain cases, application of a special pressure dressing may also be beneficial.

Topical Therapy
Some topical treatments can serve as a protective barrier that allows the scar to heal faster and with minimal marking. Many can be worn nightly and removed during the day.

IPL Therapy
IPL is a noninvasive light therapy that drastically reduces the redness of scars in just a few sessions. Dr. Yagoda uses new, patented krypton laser technology to provide quick, safe and effective scar treatment.

Chemical Peels
Chemical peels offer a wide range of benefits. By gently removing the damaged top layer of skin, a healthier, more vibrant layer of skin is revealed underneath. Scar appearance will be improved and as a benefit, surrounding skin will look more radiant and youthful than it did before.

Steroid Injections
A steroid is a powerful anti-inflammatory that can soften and flatten scar tissue. At times only one injection is necessary, but sometimes repeat injections are necessary for optimal results.

Surgical Scar Revision
Excision of existing wide and raised scars, release of tethered areas, and camouflage of unsightly scars can usually be performed in the office under local anesthesia using minor but artistically accomplished surgical techniques. These techniques minimize scar visibility by hiding them in the skin’s natural lines. They can also shorten and change the direction of a scar. Because the face does not naturally contain straight lines, linear scars tend to be quite noticeable. Camouflage techniques can convert straight-lined scars into a series of small irregular lines, making it harder for the eye to follow.

Dermabrasion
Dermabrasion remodels the surface of the skin and reduces irregularities by removing damaged upper layers of the skin, and stimulating the growth of healthier skin with new collagen and elastin.
