A Letter From Bishop Thompson on Upcoming Reconciliation Events in Our Diocese

2013 is the Year of Reconciliation in the Diocese of Louisiana, a year in which we have undertaken a great deal of planning in response to Resolution 17 of the 168th Convention of the Diocese in which we pledged ourselves to work to become a Diocese committed to ending institutional and other forms of racism through dialogue and training.

To begin our long range journey, we have scheduled two events. The main event will be at Christ Church Cathedral on January 18, 2014, at which time we will participate in a service that we are calling "Seeking Christ in all People: a Service of Commitment to Racial Healing, Justice and Reconciliation." It will be our great privilege to welcome Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori as our Celebrant on that day, which is also a part of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday weekend.

In preparation for this service, and for our efforts in years to come, we will have a meeting of all the clergy, of Senior and Junior Wardens, and of other dedicated laypersons from each congregation on November 2, 2013 at St. James Church in Baton Rouge.

Bishop Robert Wright, the 10th Bishop of Atlanta, will join us at the meeting as the Keynote Speaker and as a participant in the discussions.

Please participate with me in this essential Diocesan ministry. Most important, plan to attend, along with the leaders and other members of your congregation, the exciting events on November 2 and January 18. So that we can better plan for the November event, please complete the enclosed information form and return it to Agatha Townsend in my office no later than October 4.

ST. ANDREW'S EPISCOPAL CHURCH TO OFFER A RETREAT/WORKSHOP ON THE PRAYERS OF SAINT FRANCIS

Brother David Vryhof, Society of St. John the Evangelist, will lead this workshop on Saturday, Oct. 5, 9am - 1pm at Charlstrom Parish House.

Saint Francis of Assisi was a man captivated by God. His prayers burn with deep desire for God and with delight in God's creation. The purpose of this retreat is to examine the place of prayer in the life of Saint Francis and to learn to use the prayers he wrote and prayed as a starting point for our own prayer.
