American Baptist Chaplains & Pastoral Counselors e-Connect

Thank you to those who gave the
ultimate sacrifice!

Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday of May. It was formerly known as Decoration Day and commemorates all men and women, who have died in military service for the United States. Memorial Day started as an event to honor Union soldiers, who had died during the American Civil War. It was inspired by the way people in the Southern states honored their dead. After World War I, it was extended to include all men and women, who died in any war or military action.

It is traditional to fly the flag of the United States at half-mast from dawn until noon. Many people visit cemeteries and memorials, particularly to honor those who have died in military service. Many volunteers place an American flag on each grave in national cemeteries.  Sometimes, Memorial Day isn't an occasion of remembrance but a time of gathering with picnics, sporting events and family gatherings on this weekend. Please remember those who have gave the ultimate sacrifice while praying for their families.

A Memorial Day Prayer

Eternal God, in reflecting on the ultimate sacrifice made by soldiers, marines, sailors, airmen and coast guardsmen throughout the ages, we remember the words of our Lord Jesus, "Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friend." Grateful today for freedom and keenly aware of the enormous price paid, we humbly ask your continued blessing and protection on all who wear the cloth of our nation. Amen.
