Calling all Oyster Enthusiasts! We are looking for a few volunteers to help us with the very important job of oyster shell collection in the Baltimore, Annapolis and DC areas. Pickups occur on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays. Our volunteer needs to be able to lift a bucket of oyster shells (about 25 lbs) and ride along for shell recovery during a 6 hour run to restaurants.

We are proud to announce the results of our 2012 Chesapeake Bay oyster restoration efforts! During the 2012 season, our coalition of partners deployed 634 million spat on shell in Maryland's portion of the Chesapeake Bay, a majority of which was planted in Harris Creek, a large oyster sanctuary. In addition, portions of the Upper Bay were restocked with 100 million oyster spat on shell on wild fishery areas after last year's wide-scale mortality from excessive fresh water. ORP also recruited 70 new participating restaurants to the Shell Recycling Alliance effort and collected nearly 15,000 bushels of shell.
This success would not have been possible without close partnership with the University of Maryland Horn Point Lab Hatchery (UMD HPL), along with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the Army Corps of Engineers Baltimore District, and the Maryland Watermen's Association. Additional thanks to our Shell Recycling Alliance partners.

Mermaid's Kiss Oyster Fest!
ORP would like to thank everyone who attended our recent Mermaid's Kiss Oyster Fest. This was a unique event where guests could tour Baltimore's National Aquarium while enjoying sustainable Maryland seafood prepared by local restaurant partners, delicious Chesapeake Bay oysters, and even Maryland beer and wine.
ORP recognized individuals and organizations who have been instrumental in helping restore oysters to the Bay. We extend a huge congratulations to this year's honorees including: the UMD Horn Point Laboratory Oyster Hatchery, Randy Neilson, and Ryleigh's Oyster. We also welcomed notable speakers Senator Ben Cardin from Maryland, MD Department of Natural Resources Deputy Secretary Joe Gill, and Mike Roman, Director of the Horn Point Laboratory -- all strong advocates for our partnership's oyster restoration efforts in the Chesapeake Bay.
From the Bay, For the Bay - Dine Out
Thanks to all of the restaurants and guests who supported the Oyster Recovery Partnership in the 2nd Annual "From the Bay, For the Bay Dine Out" promotion last month! This event allowed ORP to reach and educate a broader audience about the importance of restoring oysters to the Chesapeake Bay, supporting local, sustainable seafood, and being environmental stewards through responsible consumption. |

ORP Welcomes New SRA Members
The Oyster Recovery Partnership's widely-recognized program, the Shell Recycling Alliance is made up of over 150 restaurants, caterers and seafood distributors from the mid-Atlantic region, as well as citizen volunteers who collect used oyster shells from area businesses to aid in restoring the Chesapeake Bay. Oyster reefs are one of the most endangered marine habitats on the planet, but eating oysters can also help save the Bay. For every shell recycled, ORP can plant 10 new oysters back into the Bay.
| | ORP's Shell Recycling Alliance provides 15% of Maryland's shell needs at current oyster production levels! | In the past year, ORP has collected nearly 15,000 bushels of used shell from our SRA partners bringing our total to nearly 30,000 bushels! Our newest SRA members: Washington, DC: Annapolis: Harry Browne's Paul's Homewood Cafe Baltimore, MD: Saute Canton Dockside Superior Catering by M&M Sons For a complete list of participating restaurants click here. Please patronize these wonderful partners! |

About the Oyster Recovery Partnership |
Nearly 20 years ago, the Oyster Recovery Partnership was commissioned as a cooperative coalition of multiple partners that contribute toward a large-scale restoration program that plants disease-free oysters back into the Chesapeake Bay. As a result of this successful Partnership, nearly 4 billion oysters have been planted on 1,500 acres of oyster reefs and 30,000 bushels of shell have been recycled to provide homes for new oysters. As Maryland's leading non-profit restoring oysters in the Chesapeake Bay, the Oyster Recovery Partnership also operates the region's Shell Recycling Alliance, supports the State's Marylanders Grow Oysters program and provides shellfish aquaculture and fishery support services.
